Job Description: Medical Lab SupervisorGeneral Terms & ConditionsJob Title: Medical TechnologistDepartment: Laboratory ServicesDirect Supervisor: Technical SupervisorClassification: Full-TimePay Range: DOEGeneral SummaryThe Medical Technologist (MT), under the direction of the laboratory director andsupervision of the technical supervisor, provides day-to-day supervision of testingpersonnel and reporting of test results. In the absence of the director and technicalsupervisor, the MT is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory proceduresand reporting of test results. The MT shall be able to perform all laboratory procedures ina prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established laboratory anddepartmental policies and procedures. The MT's responsibilities may include specimencollection and receipt, validation of specimen identification and appropriateness ofsample type and size and processing according to special handling protocols. The MTshall assist with the evaluation of new instruments and products and with the writing ofnew procedures. The MT shall participate in the teaching of new employees andstudents, with documentation of training and competency. The MT may be assigned theduties of the charge tech, lead tech, or supervisor when necessary. Qualifies as theGeneral Supervisor for high complexity testing under CLIA: 42 CFR 493.1459.Essential Functions & AccountabilitiesUnder the direction of the laboratory director and supervision of the technical supervisor,provide day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and reporting of test results. In theabsence of the director and technical supervisor, the MT is responsible for the properperformance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results.Independently perform all tasks according to established policies and procedures. Verifypatient identification throughout the entire testing process. Perform all required qualitycontrol and maintenance procedures as outlined in the Clinical Laboratory ImprovementAmendments (CLIA), and other relevant state and federal regulations, and internal protocolswith complete and accurate documentation.Perform all procedures within prescribed turnaround times. Perform proficiency testing withthorough and timely documentation. Demonstrate ability to appropriately prioritize work at alltimes. Call all critical/significant values as soon as available and document action perprotocol.Follow through on all tests, procedures, or tasks left from the previous shift, and report anyincomplete assignments to ensure continuity of procedures. Communicate all necessaryinformation to ensure work is completed without interruption of service. Demonstrate abilityto effectively communicate with lab coworkers, physicians, other caregivers, patients, andvendors.Demonstrate effective problem-solving and instrument troubleshooting skills. Recognizedeviation from expected results. Identify, investigate, and communicate unusual orunexpected results or situations. Consult with lead tech, supervisor, or pathologist prior toreleasing test results when test findings are inconsistent with the clinical picture, orwhenever difficulties with the procedure are encountered.Embrace a safety culture by ensuring all Infection Control/Safety protocols arefollowed at all times. Ensure adequate staff is on site prior to departure at the end of each shift. Maintain cleanliness of own work area and equipment. Replace all supplies used during the shift to ensure volumes are sufficient for the following shift, and properly dispose of wastes. Rotate stock to ensure oldest supplies are used first.Assist coworkers with difficult procedures/problems, including heavy workload.Provide instruction on new methods and instrumentation. Actively participate in staff and student education. Document all instruction completed on assigned employees' training outlines accurately and completely before the end of the shift.Demonstrate fiscal responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage.Perform other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
