As the Assistant Director Workplace Relations and Safety you will be a key adviser to the Director People Services, Executive Management, and Senior Leadership. Working with autonomy and confidence, youll lead the strategic delivery of services and guidance across: Workplace Relations Work Health and Safety Dive Program Compliance From developing policy and managing complex casework to delivering agency-wide initiatives, this is a diverse and rewarding leadership role. This role is full-time, non-ongoing (temporary) from 26 May 2025 to 19 December 2025. While the role is based in our Townsville head office, were open to Canberra for the right candidate. The key duties of the position include: Manage the delivery of high-quality human resource services. Monitor changes in employment-related legislation and APS policy, assess potential impacts on the organisation, and recommend appropriate, compliant responses. Provide expert and strategic advice on complex matters related to workplace relations, WHS, and performance management. Lead a responsive case management function that supports both employees and managers to meet their supervisory and employment obligations. Develop, review and implement employment-related policies and procedures. Oversee governance and coordination of key groups including the Authority Consultative Group, the Commonwealth Child Safe Framework Working Group, the Work Health and Safety Committee, and the Dive Safety Committee. Contribute to continuous improvement in HR business processes and support corporate functions such as planning, reporting, briefings, and audit activities. About You Were looking for a trusted expert and collaborative leader with: Deep knowledge of workplace relations, WHS, and relevant legislative frameworks (Public Service Act, Fair Work Act). Experience leading teams and managing complex employment matters with sound judgment. A practical approach to policy development and case management. Strong communication skills able to simplify the complex and handle sensitive matters with integrity. A passion for building great workplace culture and supporting strategic goals through people solutions. Essential requirements Must hold Bachelor level qualifications in Human Resources, Law, or a related discipline; or demonstrate similar equivalent professional knowledge and experience (5 years) in a similar role.
