Chief Operations Officer | Clinical Trials IndustryCelebrating over 30 years, CMAX is Australias longest running and most experienced clinical trial units conducting successful world-leading research for local and international clients, specialising in a range of early-phase trials and first-in-human studies.We are proud to be a key contributor in the advancement of global medicines and technologies - from vaccines and pain control to early warning bio-devices and hormone replacement therapies, these are just a few of the many research areas for which CMAX has provided clinical trial services.Employing more than 360 staff, CMAX is a 78-bed clinical trials unit, with a database of more than 48,000 clinical trial participants, and utilising state-of-the-art facilities, we are primely positioned, opposite the Royal Adelaide Hospital and part of the Adelaide BioMed City precinct.About the role:Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and operating as an integral member of the CMAX Executive Leadership Committee (ELC), the Chief Operations Officer (COO) will provide strategic direction and oversight across all operational areas of the business such as: Clinical & Medical Services, Study/Project Management, Laboratory, Data, Participant Engagement and Marketing.The COO will be responsible for the leadership, development, resource management and continuous improvement of all operations teams and their key departmental objectives to ensure that all clinical studies are conducted to a high standard, within budget, with a focus on profitability.This involves overseeing clinical trial scheduling, resource allocation, leading, supervising, and assessing the performance of operational teams, developing and maintaining relationships with sponsors and their representatives, and ensuring effective project planning and operational execution of clinical trials.Key leadership focus areas include:Leadership and Team Development role model, inspire, mentor, communicate clearly, and foster a collaborative environment across all teams.Resource Management and Reporting understand current and future resource needs, measure performance against objectives, and report on success metrics.Innovation and Continuous Improvement identify inefficiencies and develop solutions to streamline processes, improve productivity, and reduce costs.Key accountabilities:Leadership and Team DevelopmentPromote a safe, respectful, and productive culture aligned with company values: Resourceful, Collaborative, Respectful, Resilient, and Accountable.Collaborate with the ELC and stakeholders to establish, monitor, and achieve business objectives.Lead and mentor operational managers through regular feedback, training, coaching, and strategic guidance to build high-performing teams.Resource Management and ReportingSchedule studies to meet bed occupancy and profitability targets.Oversee participant engagement to meet trial recruitment needs.Assess new projects for timelines, complexity, and resource requirements.Engage with study sponsors, manage escalations, and facilitate problem-solving.Ensure adequate staffing and resource allocation, including workforce planning with HR.Maintain relationships with vendors and assess performance.Innovation and Continuous ImprovementPromote excellence and continuous improvement initiatives, including the adoption of new systems and technologies.Participate in updating SOPs, managing quality indicators, and other improvement projects.About you:Tertiary qualification in health or science, with additional business management qualifications preferred.Proven executive experience in clinical trials or healthcare industry.Successful leadership of operational teams and achievement of business objectives.High emotional intelligence, negotiation, and conflict management skills.Availability for full-time onsite work, with occasional remote flexibility.If inspired to join a company making a difference in healthcare, please apply with your cover letter and CV via the Apply Now function.Note: Only candidates with the legal right to work full-time in Australia will be considered.
