Who we areThe Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia''s Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government''s Antarctic goals.These goals are to:maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia''s influence within itprotect the Antarctic environmentunderstand the role of Antarctica in the global climate systemundertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.The Operations and Logistics Branch oversees our operations in Antarctica supporting people in our year-round research stations and remote field bases. The branch oversees air and sea transport (and the contracts to manage Australias icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina and Aviation capabilities) to transport expeditioners south and enable them to travel around Antarctica. We have staff with diverse skills, located primarily in Tasmania, in Antarctica and on Macquarie Island.The AADs Maritime Asset Management and Maritime Logistics sections jointly facilitate and administer the full scope of maritime activities for the AAD each season, encompassing:the provision of all shipping and watercraft capabilities for operations in the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and the Southern Oceanthe planning, management and execution of voyages to deliver program outcomes as defined in each seasonal planthe recruitment, training and deployment of specialist voyage management and watercraft operation personnelthe execution of responsibilities as vessel owner for the RSV Nuyina on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia, including through the management and monitoring of all activities undertaken by Serco Defence as contracted Ship Manageroversight of all vessel operation and lifecycle maintenance activities for the RSV Nuyina.For more information about us please visit our website.The jobThe Assistant Director RSV Nuyina - Engineering will work within a small and dedicated team with significant responsibility for the management of Australias icebreaker, RSV Nuyina. The Assistant Director RSV Nuyina - Engineering reports to the Director, Maritime Asset Management and would be expected to apply a well-developed knowledge and expertise across a range of engineering aspects in support of the ownership, including but not limited to:monitoring vessel engineering margins relating to weight, centre of gravity and electrical growth and lifecycle monitoring of the platform utilisation, accelerations, and fatigue life based on data from ship systemsmanaging and reporting of defects arising during the latent defect periods and through the vessel life and making recommendations for remedyingmonitoring the ship managers configuration management system to ensure that vessels engineering configuration is appropriately captured through up-to-date technical documentationimplementing and refining management plans, processes, procedures, and guidelines for the maritime asset management team in line with best commercial maritime industry practice.The Assistant Director RSV Nuyina - Engineering will also:review and monitor daily voyage reporting from the ships manager and from the ships staff on conclusion of each voyage and seasonprovide advice and reports to the Director, Maritime Asset Management in relation to the contracted vessel managers performance of engineering activities, ship availability, ship performance and compliance with regulatory requirementsas required, provide technical and engineering subject matter expertise in support of charter arrangements for commercial vessels, including reviewing pre-delivery inspection and incident reports and vessel operator technical / compliance documentation.What youll gain from the experienceThe successful applicant will form part of a high performing team responsible for ensuring the Australian icebreaking ship ''RSV Nuyina'' is operationally available to the Australian Antarctic Program.You will work closely with our contractor and in a strong team environment where people are valued and delivery of capability is at the forefront of our thinking and our actions.What we are looking forThe Assistant Director RSV Nuyina - Engineering should be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in:Maritime Engineering. A well-formed understanding of ship systems and engineering management practices, including an understanding of applicable legislation, regulations, rules and standards applicable to Regulated Australian Vessels. Experience with Polar Code vessels is considered highly desirable.Configuration Management: Contemporary configuration management practices in an engineering contextProject Management: Oversight and management of complex projects and developing and maintaining technical documentation and records.
