Justice and Attorney-General (Organisation site ( ) )Townsville Chambers; North Queensland Region; Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions; TownsvilleExpressions of Interest are called for a PO4 Senior Legal Officer in Finn Chambers, on a temporary flexible full-time basis, from date of commencement for a period of 12 months with possibility of extension. Senior Legal Officers are primarily responsible for preparing complex matters referred to the ODPP for prosecution.About the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions:The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) represents the State of Queensland in criminal cases. The ODPP''s significant responsibility is to prosecute criminal matters in the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal (Qld), Supreme Court, Mental Health Court, District Court, the Childrens Court of Queensland and the Magistrates Court (in limited locations and matters).About your opportunity:This is a temporary flexible-full time position from date of commencement for a period of 12 months with possibility of extension in Townsville .As a Senior Legal Officer, the incumbent will undertake a combination of the following: Preparing complex matters referred to prosecution (including appeal submissions) in a professional and timely manner Effectively managing relationships with stakeholders, including defence counsel solicitors, police officers, victims and witnesses Appearing as an advocate to prosecute or defend appeals in the District Court, sentences in the Magistrates and/or higher courts and represent the Director at bail applications, mentions and call overs in the Magistrates and/or higher courts Appearing as an advocate in committal hearings and summary hearings in the Magistrates Court (dependent on location) Liaising with complainants and relatives in prosecutions especially in relation to matters involving sexual and violent offences Supervising, motivating and leading legal officers and legal support staff in the delivery of legal services Actively engage in activities aimed at improving work practices.The successful candidate will demonstrate: The ability to apply legal principles, draft legal documents and provide legal advice as a litigation solicitor, and work effectively as an advocate in the Magistrates and/or higher courts. The ability to apply well developed interpersonal and communication skills to liaise, consult and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders. The ability to supervise, train and mentor legal and support staff to achieve outcomes and demonstrates an ability to identify and address the needs of victims of crime in a trauma informed and culturally sensitive way.
