Cadet - Maliyan Program - Law Reform and Legal ServicesJoin to apply for the Cadet - Maliyan Program - Law Reform and Legal Services role at NSW Department of Communities and JusticeLocation - Sydney (Regional locations will be considered)Employment Type - Temporary Part Time (12-month placement with possibility of extension, 14 Hours per week)Salary Clerk Grade 1/2, Base Salary ($73,522 - $79,931 (pro rata)), plus employers contribution to superannuation and annual leave loadingThis position is open to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people onlyYour roleYou will undertake a range of legal and other activities in the relevant area(s) of law or policy to contribute to efficient and effective legal support services and policy reform for the Law Reform and Legal Division within the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).What Youll DoAs a cadet in the Maliyan Program, you will engage in tasks that support legal services and justice policy development. You will assist teams in the Law Reform and Legal Services (LRLS) Division, providing support in legal and policy reform areas. Your responsibilities include leading research and analysis, drafting legal, policy, and parliamentary documents, and contributing to projects that shape law and policy. You will collaborate with experienced professionals to deliver outcomes aligned with DCJs objectives.Additional ResponsibilitiesAssist the DCJ Legal branch in providing legal advice, litigation support, dispute resolution, and ensuring legal compliance.Contribute to the Policy Reform and Legislation branch by assisting in legislative development and providing legal policy advice.Identify legal change needs and contribute to law and criminal justice reforms, supporting communication of legislative changes to the public.Collaborate with teams to shape and refine policies within communities and justice sectors.The role offers a 12-month, part-time (14 hours/week) opportunity with flexible start and end dates, hybrid working arrangements, and consideration of regional locations.What Were Looking ForA passionate law student interested in legal services and law reform for vulnerable communitiesStrong communication and legal writing skillsCurrently studying law (LLB or JD) at an accredited institutionAustralian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants onlyWilling to undertake a Working with Children Check and travel as neededApplication RequirementsApplicants must upload one of the following to confirm Aboriginality:Confirmation of Aboriginality formWritten confirmation from 2-3 Aboriginal organizations addressing descent, self-identification, and community acceptanceApply via the DCJ Careers site or Seek portal, attaching a cover letter (max 2 pages) and rsum (max 5 pages).
