We play an important role in the Australian economy. NMI does this by leading, maintaining and regulating Australias measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services. We work to give everyone an equal opportunity to contribute and progress.The Chemical and Biological Metrology branch provides measurement standards including pure chemicals, matrix mixtures and DNA standards. The branch also co-ordinates proficiency testing programs to assist laboratories assess their ongoing performance. The branch houses three of Australias national testing laboratories, for forensic drugs, ultra-trace pollutants and anti-doping in sport. The branch delivers services across multiple sectors, including food, health and environment, carrying out research and development to enhance our capabilities in line with national and international requirements.The Bioanalysis Section provides technical support and genetic reference materials within Australia and internationally. The industries we engage with include biotech instrument and test kit manufacturers, food and feed producers, biotherapeutic manufacturers and cancer research organisations.The opportunityWe need a systematic, well organised person to help us supply reference materials to our expanding client base. The position encompasses a wide range of laboratory work using the latest digital PCR methods. You will be provided with thorough training in measurement science, method validation and the requirements for provision of accredited services by contributing the Bioanalysis Quality System. Our ideal candidate adds to this culture and our workplace in their own way.What you will doYou will be accountable for managing your workflow to deliver timely, high-quality results.The main functions of the position will be:participation in nucleic acid reference material production and trouble-shooting, under supervision, including method validation, quantification, stability studies and dispensingcontribution to preparation of protocols, reports and quality documentsanalysis of DNA, environmental and food samples using validated methodsensuring adequate supplies of reagents and materials are maintained to enable the section to meet business goalsmaintaining scientific equipment and arranging calibration services when requiredliaising with internal and external clients, suppliers and stakeholdersorganising couriers to deliver reference materials to customers nationally and internationallycontributing to maintenance of a safe workplace.EligibilityYou will have a good conceptual understanding of genetic analysis gained through tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience.To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.NotesSince you may be handling biological materials such as human blood or wastewater, we will provide relevant vaccinations if needed and assessment of immunity.A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles.
