As a Network Development Manager, you will be responsible for managing teams that build, deploy and scale the Amazon networks that support AWS, customers, and other business units, across multiple global datacenters.AWS Core Networking is focused on building Data Centers and the network that allows Data Centers to function efficiently. They own the solutions that allow racks to be aggregated and Data Centers to be interconnected. Core Networking''s goal is to balance efficiency, performance and reliability to allow customers access to their applications and data.Amazons network is a key differentiator for Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across hundreds of thousands of servers worldwide. Direct reports will include Network Development Engineers who own design and optimization of the future state of the global Amazon network. The Topology team is expected to identify optimal and efficient designs to manage traffic flows, failure scenarios and optimal capacity. The team is also responsible for deep-dive and root-cause analysis of events which impact our customers ensuring that we improve our processes and designs in order to avoid customer impact in the future. AWS leaders are highly-technical and understand their environment to accurately represent operational issues and exercise high judgment during high severity events. This includes creating processes and procedures to improve efficiency in our day-to-day tasks and projects. You will drive standards across the network and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies. You will work closely on supporting our internal customers and ensuring that their needs and issues are being addressed.Network MeasurementAs a Network Development Manager, you will be expected to drive quality into the metrics we report to assist us in focusing on the areas that give us the best ROI. This includes measurement of our issues, network capacity, vendor equipment/failures analysis and network performance.Performance Management/Team HealthYou will own all facets of performance and career management for the team. Regular one-on-one meetings with all team members are required. You will be expected to provide both technical and soft skill mentoring in order to maintain a well-rounded, world-class organization. This includes project management, quality audits and coordination of training sessions with senior-level engineers as well as day-to-day oversight of the team including scheduling of a 8x7x365 operational rota.Incident/Change ManagementYou will be integral to developing and improving incident and change management within the Networking space. Responsibilities include driving initiatives regarding improvements to existing tools & processes and providing feedback on new practices & procedures in order to scale with the rapid expansion of the Amazon platform and customer base.Recruiting and HiringYou will take the lead in hiring quality personnel who not only fit the needs of the current organization but also will allow the team to scale with platform and service growth. You will coordinate with Amazon and external recruiting staff to evaluate potential candidates, participate in initial phone screens and provide relevant guidance and feedback during on-site interview loops. You will also be responsible for ensuring that proper training takes place for all new hires.AutomationYou will be heavily involved in driving the team to analyze day to day operations in order to identify new automation opportunities. This will include helping our software teams in Networking understand our requirements and drive their roadmaps to ensure that our network engineers are able to directly create new automation tasks directly within those software frameworks rather than relying on other teams to deliver them.Goal Setting and DeliveryYou will directly own defining and delivering strategic goals for your team and for the wider Topology team. As part of this responsibility, you will be expected to communicate goals to the team, align the necessary resources, and communicate status to the wider leadership team.A day in the lifeEngineers in the InterDC Optical services team have a wide range of responsibilities. In terms of product development and delivery, it covers all activities related to hardware and software development, cross-platform and software integration, and transition to production for both in-house commodity and OEM optical platforms. From the lifecycle support perspective, includes day to day operations on-call, sustaining engineering, operational load automation and reduction, product and network security, network data integrity and authoritativeness, availability assurance (SRLG monitoring) and improvement (OLP, RFTS) and fiber infrastructure and vendor performance management.Our engineers not only make decisions on day-to-day work but they also own the long-term strategic view, they build strong partnership with customers to understand their immediate and future needs, their use cases and the things that we/they are not even thinking about so we make sure our solutions will fit into their needs. They bring perspective and context to influence the way we make technology and design choices, how we develop and deliver products that are right sized, fungible and future-proof at the optimum cost per bit. They understand the business impact of their recommendations and show good judgment in decision making as we consider technical trade-offs between the immediate short-term technology solutions, operational needs and the long-term business needs.The InterDC Optical Services team is responsible for the development, delivery and lifecycle support of the optical products used to interconnect AWS Data Centers and PoPs (Point of presence), ensuring diversity of supply and continually lowering data transfer cost for customers. This product portfolio serves a broad customer base and is primarily used to transport Core (EC2 & Prod) and Border (Internet) traffic in and across all but a few AWS commercial and ADC regions globally.
