We serve over 500,000 people through the efforts of over 9,000 staff and more than 1200 volunteers.About The Department Of Intensive CareThe Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital Geelong is a modern 24-bed tertiary, mixed unit. It is the largest regional ICU in Victoria, with over 1600 admissions per year. It is a designated CICM C24/AP6 Unit for core adult ICU training and paediatric intensive care experience. Our case mix is diverse including cardiothoracic surgery, general and subspecialty surgical patients, medical and subspecialty medical patients and a busy haematology oncology service. As a Tier 2 VECMOS accredited ECMO site we have a well-established ECMO service. Our ICU also provides an Outreach service with Rapid Response Team to provide support for unwell patients outside the ICU. Trainee satisfaction is very important to us and our success in this area is evident by the return of previous junior trainees in more senior and specialist roles.About The Role Intensive Care Unit RegistrarUniversity Hospital Geelong ICU is a C24 CICM accredited 24 bed level 3 adult medical, surgical and cardiothoracic ICU servicing the Greater Geelong and South Western Victoria region. We have a well-established reputation in delivering complex high quality patient care in a supportive and collaborative environment. UHG ICU has AP6 accreditation with more than 100 Paediatric cases per year and we have close clinical and trainee relationships with our state C24 PICU.Our ICU registrar cohort incorporates CICM trainees and trainees on the FANZCA, FACEM, FRACP and surgical training pathways. Training opportunities include consultant led daily rounds, attendance at daily multidisciplinary patient management meeting, developing standard ICU procedural skills under the supervision of senior medical staff, supervision of junior medical staff and liaising with other specialty groups. The ICU Outreach role includes daily ward rounds, leading MET and Code Blue calls with opportunities to develop and practice team leading and participation skills, reviewing acutely unwell ED and ward referrals and coordinating our TPN service.We offer protected Consultant supervised teaching weekly. The education program incorporates core ICU topics, CICM ( Part 1 and 2) examination preparation and multidisciplinary simulation training in the Deakin University ReVISE simulation unit. We have weekly Morbidity and Mortality meetings and monthly Safety and Quality and Journal Club meetings. We also provide monthly teaching in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography. There is a very well established research team with participation in national and multinational trials and we have assisted many CICM trainees with completion of their formal projects.Barwon Health is a Tier 2 ECMO site with the Victorian ECMO Service. Opportunities in the area of ECMO include exposure to patients receiving VA and VV ECMO and ECPR. Our unit offers experience in the decision making around ECMO initiation, the clinical management of ECMO patients, weaning and participation in ECMO related team activities. Our ECMO education program includes local education program delivery and ECMO simulation scenarios.We have a strong track record in the areas of Positive Culture, Patient Centred Care and Collaborative Communication.
