Specialist, Advanced Microscopy Services 2 year contract, 0.8-1.0 FTE Darlinghurst, Sydney, NSW Reporting to: Manager, Micro Imaging Facility About you As a Specialist, Advanced Microscopy Services, you are highly skilled and detail-oriented with a passion for supporting scientific discovery through advanced imaging technologies. With a strong foundation in confocal, fluorescence, and electron microscopy, you bring hands-on experience in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex imaging systems. Your technical expertise is matched by your ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, making you a trusted resource for training and supporting researchers and students. You are highly organised and able to manage multiple tasks at the same time. The role The Innovation Centre is seeking a technically experienced specialist to play a critical role in supporting cutting-edge research through the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of advanced imaging technologies. You will serve as the primary custodian of sophisticated microscopy systemsincluding confocal, light, high-throughput/high-content, microCT, and electron microscopyensuring their optimal performance and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. You will work closely with other innovation centre staff, internal and external users as well as institute operational staff. You will also support technical and operational functioning of other facilities in the Innovation Centre as required. This is a 2-year position. What we will trust you with Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting advanced microscopy systems while supporting efficient lab operations through project coordination and detailed reporting of research findings. Managing lab spaces and equipment to ensure compliance with safety and institutional standards Training and supporting researchers, students and facility users Developing and optimising imaging protocols Prepare facility reports, documentation, and assist with invoicing and consumables tracking Performing sample processing and cell culture Analysing imaging data, overseeing data management, equipment scheduling and user access Managing consumables, vendor relationships and inventory tracking Supporting other technical facilities within the Innovation Centre Does this sound like you? PhD or MD (or similar) in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering or related field At least 3 years of experience working with advanced optical microscopy and biological samples. Proficiency in confocal and fluorescence microscopy (fixed and live cells), human cell culture, and microscopy sample preparation, including human cellular samples. Strong skills in image analysis using software such as ImageJ/FIJI, AMIRA, CellProfiler, Harmony, or similar. Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and organisational abilities, with a keen eye for detail in maintaining records, metrics, and laboratory operations. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with experience supporting and collaborating with diverse research teams.
