Suburban Connect is a consortium of global leaders in tunnelling, including CPB Contractors, Ghella, and Acciona Construction, delivering the Tunnels South package on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, on behalf of Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA). We have a broad range of roles available to build our diverse and inclusive workforce, including construction and engineering, planning and environmental management, corporate support, administration, communications, and many others. SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is now under construction, with tunnelling to start in 2026 and trains to be running by 2035. Suburban Connect is constructing 16 km of tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley using 4 tunnel boring machines and various excavation methods. The works also include 55 cross passages, 2 tunnel portal structures, 2 station box excavations, and associated supports. About the opportunity: Suburban Connect is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for an upcoming Tunnel Safety Manager role on Suburban Rail Loop Work Package C. The role will be crucial to the safe and successful planning and support of Suburban Connect in delivering 16 km of twin tunnels (32 km in total), across the alignment. The ideal candidate will have: Previous tunnelling experience leading the Safety function on major tunnelling projects Experience supporting a broad range of tunnelling activities (e.g., TBM launch and operations, cross passage construction, hyperbaric interventions) Relevant qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety A sound understanding of Occupational Hygiene risks A proven track record of working collaboratively with key delivery leads, including Construction Managers and Superintendents, to drive strong safety outcomes and foster a positive workplace culture Strong leadership and management skills to oversee the broader Tunnels Safety team Key responsibilities of the role include: Providing guidance and advice in line with Suburban Connect''s Safety Management System and the Victorian OHS Legislative framework Serving as the main Safety lead for the Tunnelling Construction Delivery team for all tunnelling activities Managing and supporting a team of tunnelling safety professionals (Senior Safety Advisors, Safety Advisors, and Coordinators) Championing construction risk assessment processes, including collaborating with Tunnelling and Plant teams to ensure thorough planning through Construction Risk Assessment Workshops Providing a point for escalation and support for in-field safety resources and other delivery personnel Working closely with the project''s nominated Occupational Hygienist and other key resources to ensure health and hygiene risks are properly managed Overseeing incident investigations and corrective actions Monitoring and supporting safety performance reporting for senior leads throughout tunnelling areas Partnering with stakeholders and subcontractors to ensure safety compliance Building relationships with the project''s client and regulatory bodies Integrating safety protocols into project planning and execution Leading audit and certification activities from an in-field perspective Recommending and implementing safety leadership practices and innovations Guiding and mentoring other tunnel safety resources As a company valuing diversity, we foster an inclusive environment that promotes respect, belonging, and engagement, ensuring all people can participate on an equal opportunity basis.
