There are rotations for core General Medicine plus a range of rotations that have previously been accredited as general medicine-related and subspecialty terms, including acute terms.The General Internal Medicine Unit operates across the two campuses - Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals. Both hospitals have four inpatient General Internal Medicine inpatient teams and admit over 3,000 patients each a year. Sunshine Hospital also has a ward-based Rapid Admission and Discharge Unit (RADU) to manage our growing population.There is a senior medical registrar based at both Sunshine and Footscray Hospital. These roles provide managerial support to the General Internal Medicine service at each site and an inpatient consultation service. The senior medical registrar at Sunshine also supports the Obstetric Medicine Service. Both senior medical registrars work closely with the Director of Physician Education to organise preparation for the RACP written and clinical examinations and coordinate Western Health as a site for the RACP clinical examination.The ED Liaison registrar at Sunshine Hospital receives referrals from ED to General Internal Medicine, manages acutely unwell GIM inpatients in the ED and provides a medical consults service for inpatients of other units in the ED.Advanced physician trainees in GACM also participate in the after-hours clinical lead rosters, providing clinical oversight and support to junior medical staff and supporting the ICU Liaison team MET call response.The advanced trainees in General Internal Medicine work closely with the Head of Unit to ensure an efficient and high-quality service and to supervise and support junior medical staff. Rotations are also available to other specialty medical units at Western Health.Six month rotations are offered in the following areas:Senior Medical Registrar Sunshine Hospital (including obstetric medicine)Community Medicine/Complex and Chronic CareObstetric Medicine (non-SOMANZ-accredited)NephrologyInfectious DiseasesRespiratory MedicineHospital in the HomeIntensive CareThe General Internal Medicine Unit is closely associated with the University of Melbourne, Western Clinical School and has an active research program and consultants with experience in supporting productive advanced training projects.
