Please contact us if you would like to know more.HAVE A QUESTION AND WANT TO KNOW MORE:If you would like to discuss this opportunity, please contact Pamela Weiner pamela.weiner@svha.org.au or call Katerina Angelopoulos 03 9411 7280 to discuss.ROLE PURPOSETo participate in the provision of patient support services and the maintenance of quality patient care standards through the preparation, sterilisation and delivery of equipment and supplies to the clinical areas.The Instrument Technician is responsible for the provision of patient support services and the maintenance of quality patient care standards through the preparation, sterilisation and delivery of equipment and supplies to theatre. Formal qualifications and limited experience is required to work at this level and supervision is provided by senior technicians and manager.There is a 5 step process in which used instruments from the operating theatre are collected, washed, sterilised and transferred to the store room in preparation for the next surgical procedure. Duties are completed within the central sterile supply department, outside of the operating theatres and within the sterile storeroom.Washing of instruments trays (maximum of 7kg) are transferred from the trolley to the workbench. The instruments are soaked, pressure hosed and scrubbed, and then placed into a tray which is transferred to the trolley. Once the shelves of the trolley are full and/or all the instruments have been hand washed, the trolley is pushed into the washer. The washer is operated using an electronic touch pad.Checking of instruments the instruments are transferred from the washer to a trolley for spot drying. Once dry the instruments are checked (as per a checklist) and organised in preparation for wrapping.Wrapping of instruments the tray is taken from the trolley and placed onto the workbench where a barrier drape is wrapped around the tray and a label is attached which identifies the instruments that are enclosed. The wrapped trays are then placed on the trolley to be transferred to the sterilisation machine. Some individual instruments are packaged and sealed using a sealer machine.Sterilising of instruments the trolley is wheeled to the steriliser machine and the trays are automatically transferred into the machine by using an electronic remote. When sterilisation is completed machine parameters are checked (as per check list) and items put aside to cool.Delivery of instruments Once the trays have cooled down following sterilisation they are covered with a cloth. The trolley is then delivered to the sterile store room for storage.ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXTSt Vincent''s Private Hospital Melbourne (SVPHM) is a not-for-profit, private Catholic hospital caring for the community for more than 100 years. nursing judgements based on the health status, physical examination, preference, care and progress of each patient.Communicates patient response to treatment and care and documents accordingly.Facilitates communication between the patient, family, medical, nursing, ancillary and allied health staff.Initiates referrals and utilises available resources for the purpose of comprehensive care to patients and families.Appreciates the complexity of moral decision making, working cooperatively with other members of the health care team to resolve ethical and clinical issues arising in patient care.Participates in team and hospital activities as agreed with NUM.Quality and SafetyMaintain clinical registration and any required indemnity cover (if applicable).Always work ManagementCollects, cleans and decontaminates equipment used by the Operating Suite and Clinical units on a daily basis.Loads and unloads ultrasonic, instrument washers, dryers and sterilisers according to instructions and general duties list.Inspect and reassemble items as required.Prepare, check and package instruments, bowls and loan sets to be sterilised.Assists in maintaining a smooth flow of sterilised stock and equipment to the Operating Suite and Clinical Units.Regular checking and testing of washers and sterilisers.Interpret results of printouts and other tests on washers and sterilisers.Visual inspection of goods before packaging and releasing to the clinical areas.Maintains confidentiality and ensures that hospital information and records are not disclosed in any way.Works cooperatively with other members of the health care team to provide high quality service.Risk & Safety ManagementEnsures the provision of a safe work environment, work practices and minimises risks to self, staff and patients.Maintains or exceed standards of infection control, WHS, Clinical risk and legislative compliance.Accountable for personal knowledge of legislative requirements, policies and procedures in the areas of infection control, WHS and Clinical risk.Ensures all work undertaken is within own capacity, experience and training and does not accept duties follows Manual Handling Policy.SELECTION CRITERIAQualificationsRegistered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) as a Registered Nurse.National Criminal History Check.Essential Skills and ExperienceAbility to maintain collaborative and effective relationships with all multidisciplinary team members.Ability to work flexibly within the Facility service.Ability to provide clinical practice and care consistent with the mission and philosophy of the facility.Ability to plan and coordinate patient/resident/client care effectively, maintain patient/resident/client advocacy and utilise patient/resident/client management systems.Ability to participate in and support education activities and to contribute to the development of self and other team members.Have a working knowledge and understanding of relevant regulations and legislation.Ability to contribute towards effective risk management within the facility particularly in compliance with Work Health & Safety legislation.Demonstrated application of contemporary infection control standards and practices.Ability to participate in quality improvement activities.Instrument technician qualification (Certificate III) from an accredited institution such as a Mayfield course.Effective communication skills with the ability to speak, read and write English fluently is essential.Previous experience in a sterile processing unit an advantage.Must be able to undertake work of a more complex nature within established procedures and guidelines.Must rotate through all areas of the Unit.May perform this role without direct supervision but under the immediate direction of an Instrument Technician Grade 3 or 4.A mandatory 3 months orientation under the supervision of a Grade 3 or Grade 4 Instrument Technician must be undertaken if the incumbent has no prior experience in this hospital.A basic understanding of Microbiology, sterilisation, disinfection and infection control.Ability to confidently handle contaminated equipment.A commitment to safe Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety Practices.Knowledge of the correct use of ultrasonic, instrument washers and sterilisers.Keyboard skills and basic understanding of software is an advantage.Understanding of and commitment to total quality service.Willingness to comply with hospital policies and
