If you have a legal question or need advice, we offer free and confidential help to all current RMIT students.Service overviewThe RMIT Student Legal Service is run by qualified lawyers who can provide advice and information to students on a range of legal issues.Contact usandour lawyer will respond to you within three workingdays, orrefer you to a more suitable legal service,if appropriate.What can the Student Legal Service assist with?Our lawyers can help with the following:Fines, including public transport (MYKI), driving, toll andparking.Traffic accidents and drivingproblems.Renting and tenancy (we do not assist landlords or rental providers or property managers).Minor criminal matters and police powers.Consumer and debt matters.Safety-related matters (in an emergency contact police on 000).When you first speak to one of our lawyers, theyll advise you how much assistance they can provide.This may involve the following:Legal information and referrals by email that may assist you to resolve your own legalproblems.One-off legal advice (we will explain the law as it relates to your legal problem, outline your legal options and may guide you in pursuing your legal options).Casework support in limited circumstances (this may involve writing letters on your behalf and helping with negotiations,etc).What can''t the Student Legal Service do?While we aim to provide assistance to as many students as possible, we usually cannot offer ongoing assistance in individual cases. We do not provide court representation but can offer appropriate referrals.We also specifically do not assist with the following:Legal matters against other RMIT students.Related matters where the service had previously acted for the other party.Property law (e.g. conveyancing).Commercial law (e.g. setting up a business).Family law (e.g. arrangements for children, property settlements, child protection matters).Mediation.Wills.Intellectual property (e.g. trademark or copyright law).Academic matters.For legal matters we cannot help with, please contact the Victorian Legal Aid Helpline on 1300 792 387.RMIT University acknowledges the people of the Woi wurrung and Boon wurrung language groups of the eastern Kulin Nation on whose unceded lands we conduct the business of the University.
