The role also involves contributing to federal and national coverage, particularly where Commonwealth decisions intersect with state affairs.This is a dynamic and high-profile position offering the opportunity to break exclusive stories, provide authoritative political reporting, and shape the national conversation. The role suits an ambitious journalist who combines a deep understanding of NSW politics with the ability to write with clarity, urgency and insight for a national masthead.ResponsibilitiesProvide accurate, timely and engaging coverage of NSW politics, with The Australians national readership front of mind.Be predominantly based at NSW Parliament, ensuring the states major political developments are covered with rigour and authority.Break exclusive stories and develop in-depth features that reveal the inner workings of government and the impact of policy across NSW communities.Work closely with the NSW bureau chief and collaborate with the Canberra bureau to contribute to federal coverage, where relevant to NSW.Contribute to major state-based news stories in tandem with colleagues in the Sydney bureau.File clean, accurate copy to deadline, in accordance with legal and editorial standards.Build and maintain a broad and trusted network of political, policy and community contacts.Ensure all content is published to a high digital standard, including story builds and audience engagement strategies.Who are you?Proven experience covering state or federal politics, or demonstrable knowledge of the states political landscape and key players.A strong record of breaking news and delivering exclusives at a national or major metropolitan outlet.An established network of contacts across politics, government, and the community sector.Solid digital journalism skills, or a willingness to develop proficiency in digital production and audience engagement tools.The ability to report on national and foreign affairs topics where they intersect with NSW politics and policy.Strong editorial judgement and a willingness to lead the news agenda.Sound knowledge of defamation law, court reporting restrictions and media codes of practice.A flexible, can-do attitude with the capacity to work outside regular hours, including weekends, when the news cycle demands.This is a unique opportunity to join Australias most influential national newspaper and help shape the coverage of one of the country''s most politically significant statesNews BenefitsNews Benefits is our way of saying thank you to our people for their valued contribution to News, our audiences, clients and communities.
