Whether you are engaging in policy development, program implementation, or direct support services, your efforts will have a tangible impact on job seekers, employees and the economy by giving them a framework to build a future anchored and realised through employment.It is our ambition to do things differently, to create the department of great jobs where our people reflect our purpose.The RoleResponsibilitiesAs Assistant Secretary/Senior Executive Lawyer, Program Advice and Corporate Law Branch, you will lead a dynamic branch responsible for providing legal advice to the department on a diverse range of legal issues, other than on commercial and information law matters which are dealt with in the Commercial and Information Law Branch in the Division. The Program Advice and Corporate Law branch advises on a range of matters including:Legal services to the department concerning its Employment and Workforce, and Skills and Training programs, excluding commercial/contract advice. This can include advice about statutory and non-statutory programs, the development of New Policy Proposals, and the drafting of legislation, delegated legislation and instruments of appointment. This also includes providing advice on the departments administrative responsibilities for Social Security Law.Litigation, dispute resolution, customer compensation and the Commonwealth Ombudsman relationship and coordination of responses.Employment/industrial law matters (including WHS matters, code of conduct, discrimination complaints against the department, recruitment and engagement of staff, performance management, rehabilitation, entitlements, and industrial issues)The Legislation Liaison Officer function and legislation coordination for the departments legislation program as well as drafting corporate instruments and delegationsDuties And ResponsibilitiesDemonstrated substantial expertise in the delivery of complex legal services.The ability to act as a trusted advisor to the Secretary and Executive.A strong background in public law advising, including statutory development and administrative law, and knowledge, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge, of social security law principles and legislation.Experience, or the demonstrated ability to quickly acquire knowledge, of corporate law matters, including finance law and employment law.Highly developed understanding of government processes with the ability to balance, and bring together, a number of high-priority projects and cross-cutting themes to deliver on department and government priorities in a pressurised environment.Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire diverse teams to innovate and deliver with a focus on the development of people.Excellent communication, teamwork, management and stakeholder relationship skills and demonstrated ability as a persuasive leader with exceptional influencing and leadership skills.QualificationsTo be eligible for this position you must hold a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification, and admission as a legal practitioner, however described, of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.How To ApplyApplications are to be submitted via theUsing the information provided about the role, your application should include a one to two page pitch (max 750 words) which details why you are the right candidate, why you want to work for us and what you can contribute.
