This position will be responsible for collecting, receiving, and processing brain and spinal cord specimens to enable high-quality tissue samples suitable for research.Other duties include microtomy of tissues, histological and immunohistochemical staining for pathological characterization, maintenance of laboratory stocks, equipment, and records, and assisting researchers with specimen requests. The role involves an on-call component for out-of-hours brain collection, dissection, and 24/7 freezer monitoring.We encourage Indigenous applications and are committed to a diverse workforce, strongly encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply.3 key benefits of this roleOpportunity to work with human brain tissue.Work in a small team with independence.Contribute to research by generating tissue samples.Measures of successWithin 3 months, understand protocols used in the Sydney Brain Bank.Within 6 months, contribute to research by providing high-quality tissue.Within 12 months, handle duties independently and participate in research projects.ResponsibilitiesReceive and dissect human brain and spinal cord specimens, perform tissue slicing, and fulfill tissue requests.Coordinate with health practitioners and NSW Health staff for tissue collection at mortuaries.Perform brain and spinal cord removal, transport tissues, and maintain an on-call presence for collection and freezer monitoring.Embed, section, and stain specimens histologically.Maintain and store specimens long-term.Dispatch tissue samples via courier to researchers.Oversee laboratory stocks, equipment, and records.Teach laboratory techniques to students and staff.Support the SBB Director, Manager, and research team with technical and administrative tasks.Qualifications and skillsA degree or equivalent in a science discipline.Current drivers license.Experience in histology and immunohistochemistry.Excellent communication skills, with discretion and confidentiality.Ability to work independently and in a team.Attention to detail and commitment to quality.Knowledge of health and safety protocols.Desirable skillsExperience handling human tissue samples.Knowledge of neuroanatomy.Experience with Filemaker database systems.Ability to plan, execute, and document experiments.Knowledge of autopsy procedures.Our valuesImpact, collaboration, respect, excellence, integrity, and innovation are at the core of our organization.
