Job Description

Integral to Garvan, are its Scientific support services and biobanks which contain tissue and blood samples from research projects and consented participants. The Technician is to provide high quality histology and blood processing services, both to researchers within the St Vincents Health Innovation Precinct and external collaborators.THE OPPORTUNITYReporting to the Histopathology & Biospecimen Manager, the Technician will be responsible for processing blood samples and performing general histology duties in a team and collaborative environment.Salary: Up to $58,000 + 11.5% super + salary packaging (depending on experience)Employment Type: 2 year fixed-term contract with possibility to extendSNAPSHOT OF BENEFITSGenerous salary packaging to save you income tax on your wages thereby boosting your monthly take home pay (max. $15,900 general expenses + $2,650 meals/accom)Ample opportunities for on-going training and developmentStimulating, diverse and highly international research environmentFlexible work arrangements e.g. start / finish times18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents including paid superannuationA range of additional leave types to meet your personal needs including cultural leave, conference leave, community service and study leaveDiscounted Health InsuranceLifestyle discounts with our community partnersWHAT YOU WILL DOThe key responsibilities include:Processing of blood samples collected as part of the biobanks and clinical trialsPerforming general histology such as Specimen reception, tissue processing and embedding, staining, microtomy, cryosectioning and immunohistochemistry.The meticulous preparation and labelling of samplesAliquoting and snap freezing of the blood samplesHandling and maintenance of lab equipmentAll general lab dutiesStrict adherence to Study ProtocolsRecord KeepingData entry and ensuring its accuracy onto a databaseContributing to the writing of standard operating procedures and other manualsAssistance with research projectsAssisting other Garvan facilities/labs if requiredParticipating in training team and Precinct staffWorking closely and effectively with small teams, planning and prioritising work to meet all commitments.ABOUT YOUThe key skills and experience of a Research Officer include:TAFE or university degree in science, applied science, health or a health related disciplineUnderstanding of good laboratory practice guidelinesExcellent computer and communication skillsA strong commitment to quality and detailDemonstrate ability to work with limited supervisionAbility to work in a team/collaborative environmentAbility to manage multiple concurrent tasks and deadlinesABOUT GARVANGarvan Institute of Medical Research is an independent Medical Research Institute (MRI) in Sydney, delivering scientific and clinical impact on a global basis and in partnership with organisations that share our vision.
