The Year 7-12 campusis located on the original site at North Ward. The School also operatestwo Junior School campuses, both offering Pre-Prep to Year 6, at Annandale and North Shore.Townsville Grammar School is a co-educational, non-denominational Schoolwith a current enrolment of approximately 1400 students, including 125 boarders(7-12), of whom approximately 25 are international students.As one of the eight original Grammar schools in Queensland, Townsville Grammar School was established in 1888 and has offered boarding since this time. The School has a long-standing reputation as the leading academic school in Northern Queensland, also offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for Years 11 and 12.We invite applications for the position of Senior School Counsellor, a key pastoral and professional support role within our Senior School. Working closely with the Head of Senior School, School Psychologist, Heads of House and wider student support team, this position provides comprehensive case management and targeted wellbeing support for students experiencing a range of educational, behavioural, social, and emotional challenges.This is a meaningful opportunity for a qualified and experienced counsellor, social worker, or psychologist to make a tangible difference in the lives of students through collaborative, evidence-based support and strategic intervention.About the RoleThe Senior School Counsellor is responsible for:Delivering best-practice case management and integrated support to students referred by academic, pastoral, or psychological staff.Developing and coordinating individualised support plans, behaviour management plans, risk assessments, and transition strategies.Acting as the central liaison for managed students, their families, and internal stakeholders, ensuring timely, professional communication and continuity of care.Providing individual and group counselling to support mental health, behaviour, study skills, resilience, and social-emotional development.Collaborating with internal teams and external agencies to coordinate comprehensive care and support.Supporting the delivery of school-wide wellbeing initiatives aligned with the tenets of Positive Psychology.Maintaining clear, confidential, and accurate records in line with school policies and legal obligations.Qualifications and RequirementsTo be considered for this role, candidates must hold:A coursework Masters degree in guidance and counselling, social work, or a closely related discipline with training in counselling and mental health;ORGeneral registration as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).A current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) is required.Key Skills and ExperienceA minimum of five years'' experience in student counselling or case management in a school or youth-focused setting.Strong ability to build rapport with adolescents and work collaboratively with families and staff.A deep understanding of the social, emotional, and developmental challenges facing high school students.Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and a commitment to inclusive, student-centred support.Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.Proven ability to manage sensitive information with the utmost discretion and professionalism.A full position description can be downloaded here.What we offer:Competitive remuneration and 12.75% superannuation contributions.Professional Development opportunities.Access to free and confidential counselling via EAP for staff and family members.Access to EAP app offering wellbeing benefits such as webinars, health assessments and exclusive discounts from selected retailers and service providers.Access to flu vaccines.Reduced tuition fees for children of permanent staff.Paid parental leave, for eligible employees, of 14 weeks after a qualifying period.Please apply via the careers page on our website only, including a cover letter, resume and contact details for two referees who have knowledge of your professional experience.
