An inspiration to all of us: Daphne MitchellShareDaphne was forever serving the students, the School Chaplaincy Committee of Exeter High School, staff members, families and the wider community in the West Tamar Valley.I had the privilege of getting to know Daphne early 2012 when she had already been one of the main drivers of the School Chaplaincy Committee for a couple of decades. A few years later, she stepped up to be the chairperson of the committee and ever since has been an inspiration to our chaplains at the school and to me personally. No idea, no project, no challenge was ever too hard for her. Thank you, Daphne.Daphne Mitchell passed away in early July at 76 years old.Bec Cameron, our SU Chaplain at Exeter HS, writes:Just over a fortnight before, Daphne was visiting us at Exeter High School, generously offering a staff morning tea to celebrate Chaplaincy week then helping serve toasties at our Food Club. She was comfortable in the school setting having been a teacher as well as working in catering amongst the many things shed done in her work life.Despite retirement she was busy serving at the local Uniting Church in many roles including treasurer and representative for Chaplaincy. She was the heart and soul of that committee: the cheer squad behind Chaplaincy Crystal Parry (former EHS chaplain) rightly shares.Daphne was indeed one of the first people I met when I began in the role in 2022. She sought me out with great joy that a new chaplain had been found; encouraged me with a reminder of the importance of the role and welcomed me into the long legacy of Chaplaincy at the school. A legacy that Daphne had helped form. Before the Government offered funding, Daphne was instrumental in setting up the donated funds to cover the support role across multiple days, encouraging friends to rethink their weekly coffees and instead support the cause. Out of the ordinary ideas such as fashion shows to raise funds were hatched. Paul Burton, another former SU Chaplain, described her as such a passionate supporter of Chaplaincy , appreciating her support personally when he was at Exeter and adding She will be missed. Indeed she will. This sentiment is one everyone who knows her impact shares when they hear the sad news of this loss. She leaves behind a sister in Hobart and an extended church family locally. She gave of her time so willingly as a service to God. She lived a life of faith described in Hebrews 11: Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance of what we do not see. She was among the these people (who) were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. Longing for a better country-a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.On behalf of Scripture Union and the EHS community past and present, thank you Daphne.Leave A CommentCommentYour support for SU Australia is giving children and young peopleDuring the pandemic, a passionate team of volunteers at Calvary ChurchChappy Angus loves being the school chaplain at Lee StreetStateIn 1937, a young seventeen-year-old by the name of Joe MullinsClose your eyes for a minute and think back to yourAs a non-Indigenous Australian man, I confess to being a littleA lot of local families, including some at our school, haveWhat an exciting time for mission in Mannum.
