An exciting opportunity has arisen within our growing Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital! Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is an emergency wildlife hospital operating 24 hours a day 365 days per year, which admits more than 10,000 sick, injured and orphaned native animals annually.The hospital seeks to provide gold standard care for native wildlife. It does so by continuously improving, researching and also developing new and innovative solutions for treating the large variety of species and problems that are seen daily. The hospital plays a significant role in educating visitors & influencing change in peoples behaviour assisting with conservation worldwide.Veterinarians must be able to function in a dynamic environment with constantly changing priorities consistent with emergency work. Animal welfare is a priority and responsibility for personal safety when working with wild animals is critical. Customer service is an important part of the position with a need to communicate positively with the public, the media, VIPs and other staff to promote conservation and education.Duties May Include:Triage assessment and veterinary care of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife admitted to AZWHMaintaining the highest standard of animal welfareCompliance with all relevant legislation including the Nature Conservation Act, the Animal Welfare Act, COP for Wildlife in QLD and Queensland Health RegulationsCarry out post mortem examination of significant wildlife casesSupport the disease surveillance activities of Wildlife Health AustraliaAnswer email and phone enquiries to assist private vets dealing with wildlife cases in remote areasKeep up to date with all areas of veterinary medicine and wildlife care, including maintaining continuous educationCommitment to Australia Zoo Group policies and proceduresEnsure company ethics and professional standards are adhered to at all timesMaintain Australia Zoos customer service standardsAdhere to all Health and Safety ProceduresParticipate in performance training and development reviews or programs as requested by the company both on and off the jobAttend meetings as requested by Senior ManagementOther duties as requested by Curators, General Manager, Zoo Director or OwnersEssential Criteria:A Degree in Veterinary Science registrable in QueenslandA minimum of 2 years working in private practiceA minimum of 2 years experience working with Australian Wildlife in a Veterinary capacityHave or be eligible to obtain a licence to use radiation sources (diagnostic veterinary radiography) from Queensland HealthHave relevant vaccinations for working in the wildlife industry (Tetanus, Lyssavirus, Q fever)Good knowledge of emergency medicine principles, ultrasonography and surgical procedures and a methodical and sound diagnostic approachA high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to engage and communicate effectively and positively with all staff, wildlife carers and zoo visitorsSelf-motivation, initiative and the ability to work as part of a teamCommercial awarenessExcellent problem-solving skills and evidence-based decision makingComputer literacy including Excel, Word, Power Point & on-line skillsWell-developed organisational and time management skills & the ability to handle multiple tasksFlexibility with days/hours of work (including weekends, public holidays and school holidays)Excellent presentationPreferred Criteria:Current 1st Aid qualificationsGood knowledge of animal husbandry and wildlife species natural history, including hand-raising of wildlife speciesKnowledge of koala browse identification #J-18808-Ljbffr
