Together we can do more. The position is based at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Diabetes Service, providing a clinical management and consultation service to patients with endocrine disorders. The position includes participation in the after-hours endocrinology on call roster for ISLHD (on a one-in-four to one-in- five basis); and care for inpatients admitted under Endocrinology as well as endocrinology consultation services for patients admitted under other specialties. The role includes providing a minimum of three outpatient clinics at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Diabetes Service, with the clinic services being provided district wide based on clinical need. The Endocrinologist is expected to provide support and advice to the rest of the multi-disciplinary team at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Diabetes service; the team includes Diabetes Educators, Dietitians and podiatrists. Support for improving Ambulatory and Primary Health Care (APHC) Outpatient Services, and development of broader strategies to address Diabetes care and a limited response to other endocrine diseases (such as bone health and transgender health) across the District forms part of the role. Supervision of junior staff is required, including the Endocrinology Advanced Trainee and Basic Physician Trainee, as well as junior medical officers and medical students attached to the Endocrinology Team. The Illawarra Shoalhaven Diabetes Service is involved in a number of clinical trials, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to recruitment for current trials as well as the medical management of patients enrolled in existing trials. This includes undertaking responsibility for the provision of clinical supervision for other members of the multidisciplinary team involved in clinical trials. Experience in the running of clinical trials is desirable but training can be provided. The District wide position will be primarily located at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Diabetes Service with in-reach to Wollongong Hospital. Activities and locations will be guided by the agreed Model Scope of Clinical Practice for endocrinology in ISLHD that will be determined at the time of the appointment. The Endocrinologist employed by the Illawarra and Shoalhaven Diabetes service will be part of the Endocrinology Department (ISLHD Division of Medicine), but is expected to work closely with APHC.
