Job Description

OverviewThe transport assistant position is responsible for assisting to transport clients to access appointments, recreational activities, community groups & other destinations within the City of Whittlesea & surrounding areas. The role involves assisting the volunteer driver, navigating, assisting clients on and off vehicles and liaising with Whittlesea Community Connections staff. Responsibilities Meeting with the volunteer driver & obtaining a list of clients, pick-up points & journeys at the start of each shift from WCC (Epping Plaza). Navigating to pick-up & drop-off points. Assisting clients safely into and out of vehicles, ensuring clients are safe and secure and wearing appropriate restraints. Fitting child seats, booster seats and restraints into the vehicle. Accompanying clients to their destination point, including providing social support to clients while on the bus. Accepting client donations. Completing a daily report at the end of each shift, including a safety check of the bus, ensuring the bus is clean and filling out a pre and post inspection form. Reporting any accidents immediately. Respecting and following the organisations policies and procedures, including completing travel and time sheets and attending relevant meetings. Offering help & support to new transport assistants to pass on knowledge & skills. Give adequate notice if unable to volunteer. Commitment Regular - more than 6 months Training Volunteers must be willing to undertake the following training; Induction to Whittlesea Community Time required The hours for this position are negotiable & agreed upon with the Manager of Transport and Enterprise. Volunteer drivers are asked to commit to a minimum of one shift per week, which would normally be for a minimum of 8 hours. Where possible, volunteers are asked to be on-call to fill in where other drivers may not be available. Regardless of the hours per week, volunteers are asked to commit to the organisation for a minimum period of 6 months. Requirements Working with Children Check A commitment and desire to undertake the volunteering role. An open, caring & non-judgemental approach to supporting clients who are using the service. All volunteers must undertake a police records check and must not have had recent or frequent police record relating to driving under the influence of alcohol, traffic offences such as speeding or unsafe driving, assault or child abuse offences.
