Head of Discipline (HOD) Musical Theatre Position Title: Head of Discipline (Musical Theatre) Reports to: Director of Higher Education Director (DoHE) Position Summary The Head of Discipline (Musical Theatre) provides academic, creative, strategic and operational leadership for the Musical Theatre discipline at APAC. The role ensures the integration of acting, singing, and dance training within a cohesive and industry-relevant curriculum that prepares students for diverse performance contexts across stage and screen. This position requires substantial experience in the professional musical theatre or live performance industry, combined with demonstrated excellence in higher-education teaching and leadership. The Head of Discipline will leverage professional networks and scholarly expertise to create dynamic, practice-based learning experiences that align with current industry standards, creative innovation, and APACs educational vision. They will work collaboratively with other disciplines, management and administrative staff to achieve APAC''s goals and uphold its reputation for excellence in education. The role contributes to institutional governance, policy development, and course quality assurance through proactive leadership and engagement in academic committees and review cycles. Key Responsibilities Academic and Curriculum Leadership Lead the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of musical theatre units, ensuring alignment with learning outcomes, graduate attributes, and AQF/HESF standards. Develop and maintain industry-connected curriculum and co-curricular experiences that reflect contemporary musical theatre practice. Oversee moderation, assessment design, and benchmarking processes to maintain academic integrity, equity, and consistency across all screen units. Embed authentic, student-centred learning and assessment strategies that reflect real-world musical theatre contexts. Foster collaboration between Musical Theatre and other APAC disciplines to support interdisciplinary and cross-platform performance opportunities. Quality Assurance and Compliance Ensure all course materials, learning resources and assessments comply with institutional policies, the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021, and the ESOS National Code. Participate in course and unit reviews, data analysis, and reporting processes to support TEQSA-aligned quality assurance and improvement cycles. Maintain accurate and timely records of moderation, student progress, and academic staff scholarship and professional development. People and Culture Provide academic leadership, mentorship and performance guidance to teaching staff within the discipline, supporting excellence in teaching, artistic practice, and scholarship. Lead and manage staff performance, timetabling, and workload allocation within the discipline to ensure efficiency and quality delivery. Foster a collegial culture of creativity, scholarship, inclusion, and reflective practice among staff and students. Student Experience and Industry Engagement Monitor student progression, satisfaction, and engagement, ensuring effective case management and support for at-risk students. Cultivate partnerships with industry professionals, production companies, and creative organisations to provide internships, guest lectures, collaborative projects, and graduate opportunities. Represent APACs musical theatre discipline at conferences, industry events, and professional forums to enhance APACs reputation and graduate visibility. Operational and Cross-Institutional Collaboration Contribute to institutional academic governance through participation in relevant committees and working groups. Collaborate with Marketing, Student Services, and Compliance teams to ensure a high-quality, compliant, and engaging student experience from recruitment to graduation. Maintain a professional, accurate, and accessible learning management system (LMS) for all units within the discipline, ensuring transparency and effective communication. Qualifications and Experience Minimum: Masters degree in musical theatre or a closely related field. Substantial professional experience in musical theatre performance, directing, choreography, or musical direction. Demonstrated experience in higher-education teaching and academic leadership. Proven ability in curriculum design, moderation, and quality assurance processes. Experience developing and sustaining industry partnerships and collaborative projects. Proficiency in digital learning platforms (e.g., Moodle, Microsoft Office, Paradigm) and performance technologies. Deep disciplinary knowledge of musical theatre practice, pedagogy, and current industry trends. Strong understanding of higher-education quality assurance and accreditation requirements in the higher education sector. Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to lead, coach and develop others and effectively build a high performing team. Demonstrated capacity to translate strategy into robust and measurable operating plans, and proven ability to execute plans in a manner that achieves results and meets performance expectations.
