Comcare has an ongoing vacancy for an APS Level 6 Legal Adviser in the Statutory Oversight team, in Canberra or Melbourne, Full time or Part time available. Overview of team and role The Statutory Oversight team is responsible for providing expert advice on the application of statutory processes to business areas within Comcare and acts as Comcares liaison with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Commonwealth Ombudsman. Statutory Oversight actively promotes Privacy and develops Comcarewide privacy training and is responsible for ensuring Privacy Impact Assessments are completed and that Comcares activities are consistent with the Privacy Act 1988. The team is responsible for undertaking all of Comcares freedom of information functions as well as receiving Public Interest Disclosures (PID) and coordinating PID investigations. They also facilitate administrative access to personal information under the statutory requirements in the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (SRC Act). Legal Advisers are responsible for managing a case load of various requests including: Providing advice on administrative law matters including FOI and privacy and undertaking administrative decision making. Adhoc matters and administration tasks to assist the team, Senior Legal Adviser and Director. Legal Advisers may also manage a small team. Mandatory qualifications Admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory (two years or more post admission experience is desirable).
