Job Description

PhD in Bulk Metallic Glasses Additive Manufacturing University: Chalmers University of Technology, Country: SwedenDeadline: 2025-11-09 About the University Chalmers University of Technology, located in Gothenburg, is renowned for research and education across technology, natural sciences, architecture, and engineering. The Department of Industrial and Materials Science (IMS) hosts worldclass researchers and stateoftheart facilities, fostering interdisciplinary research and industrial partnerships. Chalmers is committed to equality and diversity, offers supportive benefits for international students, and Sweden provides high quality of life and excellent worklife balance. Research Topic and Significance The doctoral project focuses on developing and processing bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) using advanced additive manufacturing (AM) techniques. BMGs offer high strength, superior elastic limits, and outstanding resistance to corrosion and wear. Traditional manufacturing limits the industrial application of BMGs due to constraints on part size and geometry. This research aims to overcome these obstacles by leveraging recent advances in AM, such as multimaterial printing, insitu alloying, and adaptive process parameters. The projects significance lies in its potential to revolutionize manufacturing of highperformance materials for aerospace, biomedical engineering, and other industrial applications. Project Details The position is hosted within the Division of Materials and Manufacture at Chalmers Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The doctoral student will work with laserbased AM methodslaser powder bed fusion and laserdirected energy depositionto produce and study BMGs. Responsibilities include developing AM strategies, conducting structural and mechanical characterization, analyzing structureproperty relationships, and disseminating findings through scientific publications and conferences. Teaching duties at the undergraduate level may constitute up to 20% of working hours, extending the position to five years if applicable. The project is supervised by Assistant Professor Camille Pauzon. Candidate Profile Masters or Magisters degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (international qualifications accepted). Strong interest or experience in additive manufacturing. Solid knowledge of metallic materials, phase transformation, and microstructural characterization. Problemsolving mindset and ability to work effectively as part of a team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Experience with metallic glasses is highly desirable. Application Process Chalmers offers a fully funded doctoral position with a starting salary of 34,550SEK per month (as of May2025). The position is four years, with the possibility of extension to five years if teaching duties are included. Doctoral studies require physical presence in Sweden for the duration of the program, and a valid residence permit must be presented at the start of studies. To apply, submit the following documents in English as PDF files (maximum 40MB per file): Curriculum Vitae (CV) Personal Letter: introduction, motivation, and thoughts on the proposed research topic Attested copies of completed education, grades, and other certificates Applications must be complete and submitted via the official Chalmers job portal. Incomplete applications or those sent by email will not be considered. Reference contact details will be requested after the interview stage. Conclusion This fully funded PhD opportunity at Chalmers University of Technology offers an exceptional platform for ambitious researchers to contribute to additive manufacturing and bulk metallic glasses. Apply before 20251109 to join a dynamic research community and advance the future of industrial manufacturing. #J-18808-Ljbffr
