Graduate Classroom Teacher English and Humanities Department of Education Victoria Sunbury VIC Sunbury Downs College is a vibrant Year 7 to 12 coeducational secondary college situated in the semirural area of Sunbury. With approximately 800 students, the college offers a rich educational experience and strong student management, emphasizing core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and Physical Education. Complementary programs in the Arts, Technology, Performing Arts, Health, and Languages (Italian) are available, as are a range of VCE subjects and a structured VCE Vocational Major Programme for Years 11-12. The college provides Accelerated Curriculum and Enrichment (ACE) programmes for Years 79, a Scholars programme for Years 1011, and an accredited International Student Programme. Inclusive activities such as Maths Club, Drama Club, Choir, and a house and sports program support student engagement. Selection Criteria Graduates SC1 Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the capacity to incorporate literacy and numeracy skills, and the capacity to respond to student learning needs. SC2 Demonstrated capacity to implement highimpact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and to evaluate the impact of learning and teaching programmes on student growth. SC3 Demonstrated capacity to monitor and assess student learning, use data to inform teaching practice, and provide feedback on student growth and achievement to students and parents. Program Benefits Graduates Role Graduates The primary focus of a Range 1 classroom teacher is to develop the skills and competencies required to become an effective classroom practitioner. Faculty mentors provide structured support, guidance, and professional learning opportunities throughout the early years of teaching. Range 1 teachers plan, prepare, and deliver programmes, manage classrooms, and support the integration of curriculum, assessment and pedagogy across the school. Responsibilities also include participation in school policy development, project teams, and cocurricula activity organisation. Responsibilities Graduates Core responsibilities include: Planning and implementing a range of teaching programmes or courses of study. Teaching an area of the curriculum or a general curriculum to a year level. Monitoring, evaluating and reporting student progress in key learning areas. Implementing strategies to achieve targets related to student learning outcomes. Maintaining records of class attendance and recording student progress. Implementing effective student management consistent with the school charter. Working with a mentor to participate in professional development planning, implementation and reflection, and developing a professional portfolio. Additional responsibilities may include but are not limited to: Supervising a range of student activities, including support and welfare programmes. Contributing to a range of cocurricula programmes. Not be employed as a teacher by the Department at the time the advertised position is to commence. Be currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Qualification Requirements The person must have provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching. If the person completed an Australian postgraduate level initial teaching program or course of study on or after 1 January 2024, they must demonstrate that they have satisfactorily completed a postgraduate level accredited initial teacher education programme recognised by an Australian State or Territory Teacher Regulatory Authority. A person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme after 1 July 2016 must also demonstrate that they have passed the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) requirements, if not already satisfied by the ITE programme.
