Job Description

Friends for Good Friends for Good is dedicated to freeing people from loneliness. We provide a range of services, including FriendLine, MateLine and ArabicLine, alongside conducting research and delivering community education to build a more connected Australia. Our friendship support lines offer a welcoming space for people to feel less lonely. Supervisors play a key role in coordinating these services and guiding the volunteers who make them possible. We also partner with TeaTime to deliver Messages for Good, a national initiative where volunteers send digital messages of kindness and encouragement to residents in Aged Care facilities. Position Title: Friends for Good Support Lines Supervisor Geelong. Accountability: The position is directly responsible to the Chief Executive Officer. Entitlements: Salary and conditions are as per the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award (SCHCADS) 2010. The classification is dependent on skills and experience. Salary sacrificing is available. Hours of Work: This is a part-time position of 5 hours per week. The role requires availability from 1pm to 4pm on Wednesday afternoons. Place of Work: 68-70 Little Ryrie St, Geelong. Tasks The main focus of the position is to ensure that FriendLine, MateLine and ArabicLine continue to operate as high-quality, safe and supportive services for the Australian community. To achieve this, volunteers must be well supported in their roles, with their health, wellbeing and sense of connection prioritised at all times. This includes volunteers delivering our friendship support lines as well as those participating in our Messages for Good program. Supervisors serve as the key point of contact for crisis situations and for difficult calls escalated by volunteer call takers. Supervisors also provide ongoing debriefing to volunteers after their calls or activities. Specific Duties Gain an excellent knowledge of loneliness and social isolation in Australia. Provide orientation sessions for the call takers, ensuring that only those volunteers who can provide emotional support and, importantly, friendship, to a very high standard, are permitted to continue in the role. Provide training and support to call line volunteers including in the use of the Friends for Good telephony system. Provide individual debriefing for volunteer call takers, ensuring that their health and wellbeing is paramount. Complete administrative tasks, including keeping accurate records and rostering volunteers. Take support line calls when no volunteers or only one volunteer is available on shift. Assist with recruitment tasks when time permits such as interviewing applicants, completing referee checks, Police checks and training. Support the Messages for Good program by recruiting volunteers, monitoring posts, and providing guidance and checkins to ensure volunteers feel supported. Work in partnership with other Friends for Good staff to form a strong and highly functioning team, supporting one another. Key Selection Criteria Essential An in-depth understanding of the health impacts of loneliness and social isolation. Experience working in the health or community sector. Experience working directly with marginalised and/or disadvantaged groups. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organisational and administrative skills. Experience managing or supervising volunteers. Counselling, Social Work or Psychology qualifications. Desirable Experience developing new services or programmes.
