The institute will evaluate emerging AI safety and risk capabilities, share information and support the Government in addressing AI risks and harms. It is not a regulator or statutory body. Position: General Manager, AI Safety Institute As General Manager you will lead the establishment of the AISI and deliver its outcomes, contribute to the National AI Plan, manage a multidisciplinary branch, engage with Government and industry, and advise on regulatory frameworks. Responsibilities - Accountable for the establishment and outcomes of the AISI - Implement the Governments National AI Plan - Deliver outcomes and priorities for the department with a focus on technology, digital, AI safety and governance - Lead a highly motivated multidisciplinary branch - Coordinate with other Government parts, including the National AI Centre - Build robust relationships with domestic and overseas AI developers and technical leaders - Provide insight to ministers, departments and regulators - Advise on portfolio issues across policy, technical and organisational aspects Ideal Candidate Strong experience in AI, balanced leadership across policy, technical and external pressures. Qualifications & Experience - Technical knowledge of AI safety science and testing frontier AI models - Understanding of Australian Government regulatory systems and the National Intelligence Community - Familiarity with international AI safety developments and frameworks - Capacity to leverage networks and processes to inform action on AI risks - Tertiary qualifications in relevant disciplines (computer science, data science, mathematics, physical sciences, cyber security, behavioural sciences, economics, law, public policy or regulation) - Ability to engage with stakeholders including researchers, engineers, ministers, public servants, regulators, national intelligence and security professionals Eligibility Candidacy requires Australian citizenship and the ability to obtain/maintain a minimum NV1 Security Clearance.
