The area is home to the endangered kiwi bird and to the rare giant kauri snail. Local volunteers and staff work together to protect this lush forest and restore it to its natural splendor. The organization operates on sustainable principles and is entirely offgrid, using recycled structures and tools.In partnership with the Department of Conservation, volunteers protect and monitor wildlife in other forests, creating access trails, guarding native species from invasive rats, possums, and stoats, planting native trees, monitoring pest numbers, and building a lasting habitat for the endangered Kiwi and Kokako birds. As an intern, you receive extra training and mentoring that prepares you to lead a small team of volunteers.
