University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279) Fixed Term Consultant Paediatrician in Emergency Medicine The closing date is 16 February 2026 Fixed Term Consultant Paediatrician in Emergency Medicine - From 27th April 2026 until 8 January 2027 - Covering maternity leave An exciting opportunity to join a growing team in a modern, standalone Childrens Emergency Department by the sea in the Southeast of England. Working as part of a busy and vibrant team, you will lead on the delivery of excellent care within the paediatric emergency department, in a fixed term 8PR post, covering parental leave, to complement the existing Childrens Emergency Department Consultant Team. This post will contribute to the consultantled care provided in the Childrens emergency Department and to increased consultant presence at weekends. The post is 8PR with flexibility regarding shift pattern. There is a commitment to provide shopfloor care 1:6 weekends. Main duties of the job This fixed term 8PR post will contribute to the work of a team paediatricians providing consultant delivered and supervised care in the paediatric emergency department. There is currently a rolling rota to provide: A consultant delivered service 08:3024:00h in CED 7 days a week On call out of hours covering CED Consultant cover in our newly opened Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit 08:3013:00 MondayFriday. Job responsibilitiesnTo provide consistently excellent consultant delivered and supervised care in the paediatric emergency department. To work as part of the consultant, nursing and directorate team to protect and enhance the reputation of the Alex, leading its development as the childrens hospital for the South East Coast region. To work collaboratively with other specialties. To contribute to undergraduate teaching of medical students at BSMS. To provide high quality postgraduate teaching and experience to doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in training. To support junior doctors in clinical and educational supervisor roles. To ensure our personal and organisational responsibility for safeguarding children and young people is honoured effectively. To ensure our personal and organisational responsibility for the delivery of safe and high quality services for children, responsive to the needs of them and their families, is honoured effectively. To contribute to the delivery of services which are financially responsible and efficient. To work with the Academic Department of Paediatrics and BSMS to establish a respected research programme and presence in national and international peerreviewed journals and meetings. Work effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, including the CAMHS liaison service. To support the development of innovative models of care, including the development of advanced nursing roles. The department is committed to ensuring all consultants are treated equally and fairly. The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this subsection are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. Interviews are tentatively planned to take place on 25 November 2025 and applicants will be informed of any changes accordingly. Person Specification Experience/Qualifications MRCPCH or its recognised equivalent Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Paediatrics or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC) Higher Degree Teaching qualification Clinical Skills & Experience Paediatric Emergency Medicine Skills and experience Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
