Department: Adaptation Mitigation & ReconstructionLocation:Parramatta, NSW, AU, 2150Req ID: 80701Full time, ongoing role (35 hours/week) in the Hazard, Risk and Data Division.Parramatta/Sydney based role with flexible work options and hybrid arrangements availableClerk Grade 9/10; Salary ($129,464 - $142,665 per annum) plus employer''s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loadingAs Senior Economist - Disaster Costs, you will drive the development of the Authority''s disaster economics capability to better understand the economic drivers, consequences and policy responses to natural hazard disasters. The role contributes to modelling and analysis at the intersection of economics, public policy and catastrophe risk to help NSW assess and manage the costs of natural hazard events.About the RoleThe key aspect of this role is to integrate quantitative disaster risk information with broader economic, social and environmental cost analysis to inform our Disaster Adaptation Plan (DAP) and State Disaster Mitigation Plan (SDMP), and to support aligned whole of government funding and long-term resilience initiatives.Deliver discrete analytical projects and workstreams to estimate economic costs, evaluate mitigation investments and adaptation pathways, assess risk transfer mechanisms, understand socioeconomic vulnerability and inequality in recovery and contribute to strategic and fiscal planning.Provide economic insights, advice and scenario analysis to support the State Disaster Mitigation Plan (SDMP), regional Disaster Adaptation Plans (DAPs), NSW Government business cases for investment in long-term risk reduction and resilience, and other whole-of-government processes.Lead components of the development and refinement of frameworks and methods to quantify the costs of disasters, aligned with NSW Government CBA and fiscal frameworks.Translate catastrophe model outputs (e.g. Average Annual Loss) into economic and social cost estimates, and provide advice on their implications for policy, investment, and disaster risk management.Use cost-benefit analysis and economic evaluation techniques to estimate the aggregate value of mitigation and adaptation initiatives (e.g., building code changes, land use planning, adaptation pathways).Contribute analysis and research on insurance coverage, affordability, and protection gaps across NSW.Support the development of disaster economics capability within government, including overseeing consultant inputs and working collaboratively with internal stakeholders across government.Support the Director and senior staff by preparing high-quality analysis and briefing material that contributes to the team''s reputation as a source of authoritative, policy-relevant economic analysis of disaster costs to government and society.About YouYou are looking for more than just another economics role something with purpose, challenge and tangible real-world impact.
