Overview$70,950 base salary (T3.1) + Super (12%) + Generous Salary Packaging OptionsFull-time, 2-year fixed term contractBased in MelbourneWe''re on the lookout for an Animal Technician or Junior Research Assistant to join our Cardiovascular Inflammation and Redox Biology lab. In this role you''ll play a key role in supporting preclinical research aimed at reducing the burden of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. You''ll oversee the welfare of diabetic mice, conduct daily health monitoring, administer drugs and specialist diets, and maintain meticulous records. You''ll also train junior staff and students in animal handling, assist with tissue collection and processing, and support researchers with experimental workflows.How you''ll make a differenceIn this role, you''ll be at the heart of vital preclinical research, helping to advance new therapies for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. By ensuring the welfare of diabetic mice, maintaining rigorous health and experimental records, and supporting both researchers and junior staff, you''ll directly contribute to the success of studies that aim to improve patient outcomes and drive scientific breakthroughs in the field.You will become a valued member of our innovative team at the Institute. Through this key role, you can contribute to our vision to help people to live healthier for longer, and to stop heart disease and diabetes in their tracks.How you''ll make an impactEnsure the welfare and care of diabetic mice through daily monitoring and husbandry.Administer drugs, interventions and specialist diets.Maintain accurate records of health data, procedures, and experimental outcomes.Train and mentor junior technicians and students in animal handling.Assist with tissue collection, processing and storage.Support researchers with reagent preparation, dosing solutions, and sample tracking.What will you bring?Education And ExperienceTertiary qualification in Biomedical Science, Animal Science, Laboratory Animal Technology, or related discipline; or Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Animal Technology or Animal SciencesExperience in animal welfare, laboratory animal care and research support.Knowledge And SkillsStrong familiarity with animal welfare principles, humane endpoints, and pain/distress recognition in mice.Understanding of Animal Ethics Committee requirements and ethical responsibilities.Proficiency in mouse handling, restraint, anatomy and physiology.Knowledge of diabetes pathophysiology in mice and standard procedures.Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.Willingness to learn lab-specific SOPs, diabetic interventions and institute-specific systems.So, why join us?Enjoy a rewarding career in a leading international research institute, where you can make a real difference.
