The College offers individualized and flexible multiyear secondary education programs for young people disengaged from mainstream schooling. The College provides a variety of innovative teaching and learning practices that acknowledge young peoples complex education and social needs and empower them to identify and pursue individual transition to adulthood, further education, employment, back to a mainstream school setting and importantly a connection to the community. Staff at the College will be multidisciplinary in response to the diverse needs of young people and their families.The College is a registered Special Assistance School across three campuses located within Edmonton Manoora and the main campus in Cooktown. Cooktown has an enrolment of 38 young people. The Cooktown campus includes a 32bed years 712 residential unit for weekly and fulltime boarders. While Manoora and Edmonton provide alternative educational pathways via day schooling for young people in years 712.Young people who attend Holy Spirit College include Indigenous and nonIndigenous young people disengaged from mainstream education for a range of reasons, including:history of complex traumaextended periods of unexplained absenceshigh mobilitycontact with the juvenile justice systemcare of the Office of Children and Familiesmental illness or risk of selfharm or substance abuserepeated exclusion or suspension from schoolhomelessnessgenerational history of early school leaving and/or unemploymentAbout the RoleThe Teacher works with and supports young people, their families, and college staff in assisting young people to develop their skills for taking the next steps in their lives. The position requires an extraordinary commitment to serving marginalized and disengaged young people who may have a range of personal and social issues, including social, emotional, cognitive, sensory or physical disability. Many of the young people are impacted by complex trauma experiences. The position requires a strong respect and nonjudgemental attitude to disengaged young people and their family/guardian needs in preparing for the next phase of their lives.
