The Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) is a mechanical/hydraulic device used to simulate heavy vehicle traffic on road pavement structures under controlled conditions. It is approximately 26m long and 4m high. It allows road materials to be tested and for their performance to be evaluated in a very short time span compared to test sites under normal traffic conditions. This device is designed to operate onsite on particular roads in the network, or in a controlled environment within a large shed (50m20m). Mechanical Technician Role In this role you will be tasked with ensuring the Western Australian ALF device is maintained and operated to our testing requirements. As with all mechanical devices, this will require sound fault diagnosis skills and practical skills for correcting faults. The position is also responsible for the updating of documentation (covering maintenance and safe operations) to meet both quality standards and compliance with all work health and safety requirements. This role would suit an enthusiastic, selfstarting problem solver who takes pride in achieving the efficiency and safety outcomes for equipment in their care. Good communication skills are essential in working alongside research scientists and engineers, technical staff and external service providers. Ideally you will have knowledge of hydraulics and electrical systems, as well as hold a current forklift drivers licence. The successful candidate will be onsite in WA with flexibility/availability for travel to assist with the ALF machines based in Melbourne/Queensland on occasion. This position will commence as a 6month contract, with strong potential for extension or transition to a permanent role. This role offers flexible working hours, with adjustments based on project requirements as needed. This position will be suitable for a mechanical technician with a minimum of 3years heavy industrial experience who enjoys a mechanical challenging environment, as long as you are confident in your mechanical and technical problemsolving capabilities and have a solutiondriven approach. The role also includes a strong experimental component, supporting pavement testing programs through experimental setup, operation of testing and monitoring equipment, and collection of performance data in collaboration with research staff. Responsibilities Maintain the site for safety, neatness and cleanliness, with a strong safety mindset (OH&S certifications highly desirable). Conduct scheduled maintenance, repairs and upgrades to the ALF machine. Key Skills and Experience Required for the Role Be familiar with heavyduty machine components and be able to diagnose, repair and resolve normal faults. Have sound experience in the heavy industrial sector with advanced hydraulic, mechanical, electrical and electronic technologies. Sound knowledge and experience in operating and maintaining heavyduty machines and be familiar with processes for disassembly and reassembly. Excellent communication skills to provide advice on specific technical aspects of projects, liaising with suppliers, subcontractors and internal/external stakeholders. Apply solid mechanical aptitude to testing instrumentation. Must have sound computer literacy, particularly capabilities in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Teams). Work under limited supervision as well as supervise subcontractors where required. Strong time management and project management skills with a track record of delivering on time, within budget and with high quality. Selfmotivated and able to work solo for extended periods of time. Supports and actively participates in experimental pavement testing programs. Sets up, operates, and assists with data acquisition using labbased and fieldtesting equipment. Applies strong procedural discipline to experimental work, including repeatability, documentation and control of test conditions.
