OverviewDementia Australia is the national peak body for people of all ages living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers. We provide advocacy, support services, education, and information.Social connections play an important role in maintaining cognitive function in dementia. Older adults with cognitive impairments such as dementia are at heightened risk of loneliness and depression. Often, their cognitive difficulties are related not only to memory problems but also to problems with interacting and engaging socially with others.We hope to help people living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment maintain or enhance their social engagement and quality of life by providing inclusive social activities with peers, dedicated staff and volunteers. Our dementia-friendly program provides a safe and inclusive environment where participants can take a break from their home routine, connect with others in their community, and enjoy a day of socialising and meaningful activities. The program also provides valuable respite for carers.Based in our dementia-friendly space in Winnellie, and sometimes visiting local community locations such as parks, gardens, cafs, museums and galleries, the program offers engaging activities tailored to each individual using the principles of person-centred care.What the program offers participantsArts and craftsGames and gentle sportsMusic and nostalgic activitiesReading and reminiscingOutdoor activities and community outingsRelaxation and social conversationTransport is provided to and from participants homes, helping make the program accessible for those attending.The impact youll makeBy volunteering with the Dementia Day Program, youll help create opportunities for people living with dementia to:Stay socially connectedFeel included and supportedBuild confidence and wellbeingRemain living independently in their own homes and communities for longerThe Dementia Day Program runs Monday to Friday, and volunteers can choose a day and time that suits their schedule.
