Job Description

Executive leadership | Strategy | Governance | Purpose-led organisation The Y WA exists to provide opportunities for children and young people to flourish and grow in Body, Mind and Spirit. It is a mission the organisation has pursued in WA communities for more than 120 years - and today, it does so at genuine scale. The Y WA is one of the states largest purpose-led organisations, delivering close to 200 services across more than 50 communities, with almost 3 million participations annually. Its reach spans early learning and childrens services, a registered school, recreation, health and wellness, and youth and community services, including the Western Australian Youth Parliament - one of the most respected youth leadership programmes in the country. Success is measured by four outcomes for young people: Belonging, Competence, Independence and Connectedness. The Y WA understands that lasting impact requires lasting financial strength. Its Growth for Impact Strategy is built on a straightforward proposition: strategic growth enables more children and young people to flourish. This includes expanding Childrens Services and Y School - the organisations registered school - growing the Outside School Hours Care and Early Learning business, opening new campuses and building the data, systems and people capability required to underpin long-term performance. Commercially disciplined and mission-led, this is an organisation that knows where it is going - and why. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and an integral part of the Executive Leadership Team, the Chief Financial Officer is a pivotal appointment for the Y WA. The organisations ambition is significant. Delivering on it requires a CFO who understands that sustainable mission delivery depends on sustainable financial architecture - and who has the acumen, rigour, and conviction to build it. This is not a role for a passenger. It is a leadership position that will shape the financial future of one of WAs most impactful organisations. The CFO is accountable for the financial strategy and health of the organisation, spanning financial planning, management reporting, internal controls, audit, treasury, risk, and compliance. The role also oversees the administration function - including insurance, fleet, facilities, and property and asset management, providing governance support to the Board, Finance and Audit Committee and CEO. Beyond the technical mandate, this leader will drive a genuine culture of financial accountability, equipping the Executive Leadership Team and operational managers with the insight and tools to make better decisions, faster. The Y WAs leadership operates as one team, and the CFO will be expected to contribute fully to that ethos. The Y WA is seeking a CFO with the technical depth and leadership character to operate effectively in a complex, high-stakes environment - and the personal values to thrive in a mission-driven one. The CFO is expected to work across boundaries and have a deep understanding of other Executive portfolios. The Executive team is viewed as the number one team and works collaboratively to deliver the best decisions for the organisation. The successful candidate will bring a degree-level qualification in finance, accounting or business, supported by CPA or CA designation and a proven track record in senior financial leadership. Sector background matters less than the quality of thinking; what counts is the ability to lead, to work in a team, the rigour to build robust financial frameworks and the credibility to influence at the highest levels. Commercially sharp and strategically oriented, the successful candidate will connect financial performance to organisational outcomes and communicate that link clearly. They will be a trusted partner to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team and Board, and an accessible resource to operational leaders - direct and decisive, able to translate complexity into clarity and drive accountability without losing the room. Above all, the Y WA is looking for someone genuinely aligned with its values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring - motivated by the opportunity to help build an organisation that measures its success by the difference it makes in young lives. This role offers the opportunity to apply commercial and financial leadership capability in an environment where strong financial stewardship directly enables positive outcomes for children, young people and communities across Western Australia. Few executive appointments combine this level of commercial complexity, strategic influence and genuine purpose. The Y WA is growing - its footprint, its impact and its ambition - and the incoming CFO will have a direct hand in shaping what it becomes. For the right finance leader, this is a rare opportunity. Derwent Search is proud to partner with The Y Western Australia in the recruitment of this pivotal role. To apply, please lodge your application via the link in this advertisement.
