Bagala Aboriginal Corporation Independent NonExecutive Director Date published: 27th February 2026 The Opportunity We are seeking three Independent NonExecutive Directors to guide the Bagala Aboriginal Corporation, an organization with strong political influence across the Territory and beyond. With a new CEO appointed and a fresh strategic plan about to commence, the organization is entering a defining chapter. As part of this new direction, you will support the development of community services, commercial enterprises and serve as custodian of one of Australias most important cultural events. About Bagala Aboriginal Corporation Bagala Aboriginal Corporation is a dynamic entity dedicated to providing services, meaningful development opportunities and employment for Indigenous people in the Barunga and Wugularr communities. It is the home of the Barunga Festival, a nationally recognized event with a rich history dating back to 1985. Commercial Enterprises: Oversight of the Remote Laundry and Bagala Store. Community Programs: Community Court and Men''s Wellness initiatives. Property Management: Management of a portfolio of commercial and residential assets. About the Role To provide independent oversight, strategic guidance and specialised expertise to the Bagala Aboriginal Corporation Board, ensuring high standards of corporate governance and the fulfillment of the Corporations objectives. Key Responsibilities Governance and Oversight: Provide governance oversight ensuring the organization operates in accordance with its constitution, governing rules and complies with relevant legislation. Strategic Leadership: Contribute to the development and ongoing oversight of the organizations strategic plan and monitor progress against strategic priorities. Financial Governance: Ensure the organization is financially sustainable, budgets are reviewed and approved, and overall financial performance is monitored. Risk Management: Identify and oversee organisational risks and ensure appropriate risk management systems are in place. CEO Oversight and Support: Oversee (and when required appoint or remove) the CEO, provide support and guidance, and monitor performance, accountability and reporting. About You We are seeking three Independent NonExecutive Directors who bring strategic insight, governance acumen and a shared passion for supporting remote Aboriginal communities. Candidates should have a sound understanding of directors legal, ethical, fiduciary and financial responsibilities; be able to think strategically, financially literate, and possess cultural sensitivity to support the Jawoyn clan group and the Barunga Festival. Essential Criteria Specialised Expertise: Demonstrated highlevel experience in Law, Finance, or Business Management. Governance Knowledge: Deep understanding of director duties, preferably within the CATSI Act framework or similar regulated environments. Integrity: Clean professional record; not disqualified from managing corporations under Part 65 of the CATSI Act. TechnologyEnabled Leadership: Ability to contribute effectively to boardlevel discussions via videoconferencing platforms. Remote Collaboration: Proven track record of engaging and providing fiduciary oversight while serving on a remote or hybrid board. Financial Knowledge: Ability to assess commercial business sustainability for both the parent organization and the community store. Desirable Background and Knowledge ACCO, local government or social services experience. Previous board or senior governance experience in NFP or regulated environments. Experience in event management or overseeing largescale community projects. Knowledge of the CATSI Act 2006 and National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. Experience living or working in remote Indigenous communities. Qualifications Tertiary qualifications in business, law, accounting or a related field. Completion of the AICD Company Directors Course (or equivalent) is highly regarded. AICD membership (or willingness to obtain). Mandatory Requirements Ochre Card: Working with Children Clearance. Police Check: National Criminal History Check (no more than 3 months old). Remuneration This is a sitting fee remunerated NonExecutive Director position. Payment is provided for preparation and attendance at board meetings (six annually) and relevant subcommittees at the rate of $450 for a fullday meeting, $300 for a halfday, and $175 for meetings under 2 hours.
