About ACTGAL The ACT Government Analytical Laboratory (ACTGAL) is a multidisciplinary scientific facility delivering highquality analytical services across Quality, Preclinical Research, Microbiology, Environmental Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Toxicology. ACTGAL operates under a certified ISO 9001 quality management system. About the Forensic Toxicology Unit The Forensic Toxicology Unit is a specialised section within ACTGAL, accredited to ISO 17025 (Legal, including Forensic Science). The unit provides: Analysis and reporting of biological specimens to identify and quantify drugs and poisons in support of ACT legislation and policy. Expert advice and evidence , including the presentation of expert testimony in ACT courts, relating to the analyses conducted by the unit. About the Forensic Chemistry Unit The Forensic Chemistry is a unit of ACTGAL. It is accredited to ISO 17025 (Legal (Including Forensic Science)) and provides the following services: Analysis and reporting of unknown exhibits for the presence and quantity of drugs and/or poisons to support various ACT and Commonwealth controlled substance related legislation and policy; Technical expertise and response to clandestine laboratory Investigations Provision of expert advice and evidence related to the analysis it carries out. About the Opportunity The Senior Forensic Chemist plays a role in delivering highquality forensic toxicology services in the ACT. The position is responsible for the analytical investigation of toxicological samples, preparation and review of reports, presentation of expert evidence in court, and contributions to ongoing quality management, method development and validation. The successful applicant will, under limited direction, undertake analytical investigations of toxicological and forensic evidence and prepare highquality reports to support the justice system, including providing expert evidence to courts and the coroner as required. The role carries responsibilities under relevant legislation and operates within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, ensuring all activities meet established quality, technical and reporting standards. The position contributes to more complex analytical investigations in support of senior staff and assists in the maintenance and continuous improvement of the Directorates quality management system. The occupant will support the development, validation and implementation of new or improved analytical methods, technologies and operational systems. The role includes supervision and training of junior staff and the performance of other duties consistent with the classification level that contribute to the effective operation and priorities of the Directorate.
