Senior Satellite Communications EngineerPosition DetailsContract Duration: 03 Years (12 Months initially + 24 Months extension)Work Location: Only Canberra (Purely Onsite)Eligibility: NV2 Clearance or above.Tentative Start Date: 02nd March 2026Position DescriptionThe Telecommunications and Data Centre Support Section within the Infrastructure and Operational Support Branch of the department''s Information Management and Technology Division has a requirement for a Satellite Communications Engineer who will play a critical role in the delivery of the department''s Satellite Modernisation Project. This role involves the design, implementation, and maintenance of satellite communication systems, with a focus on both legacy GEO infrastructure and emerging NGSO technologies. The engineer will support highlevel design activities, contribute to technology investigations, and assist in the deployment and upkeep of satellite terminals across department posts.The successful candidate will work closely with crossfunctional teams including architecture, cyber assurance, and regional technical officers to ensure reliable, secure, and highperformance satellite communications.Technical SkillsBachelor of Engineering in Electronics and/or CommunicationsDiploma of Engineering in Electronics and/or CommunicationsAbout the ProjectThe Satellite Modernisation Project is a multiyear initiative led by the department to upgrade and futureprove its satellite communications infrastructure across global posts. The project aims to improve performance, reliability, and resilience of the department''s Wide Area Network (WAN) links by transitioning from legacy Geostationary Orbit (GEO) systems to modern NonGeostationary Orbit (NGSO) technologies. This includes:Integration of highperformance, lowmaintenance satellite terminalsDeployment of NGSO capabilities to pilot sitesMaintenance of highrisk GEO locationsThe project supports the department''s broader digital transformation goals, enabling secure, infrastructureindependent communications that are essential for delivering cloudhosted services and maintaining operational continuity in remote and challenging environments.Responsibilities and QualificationsDemonstrated experience (5+ years) in satellite communications engineering, including GEO and NGSO systems.Strong understanding of RF and microwave communication systems, including design, testing, and optimisation.Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing highavailability WAN services, including satellitebased connectivity solutions that ensure reliable and resilient communications across geographically dispersed locations.Ability to produce highquality technical documentation, including highlevel designs and maintenance plans.Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in crossfunctional and geographically distributed teams.Willingness and ability to travel regularly to geographically dispersed department posts and remote locations as required for system deployment, maintenance, and support activities.Experience supporting government or defence satellite communications projects.Ability to mentor or provide technical guidance to junior engineers or field technicians.The Next Step is EasyIf you are interested, you may send an email to [email protected] Incentive ProgramAs always, we have the candidate referral incentive program through which you will receive $1000 for each successful referral after the referred candidate''s successful selection and joining. #J-18808-Ljbffr
