The General Counsel is a Director-level role responsible for the firms legal, risk and ethics framework, providing strategic advice to the Board, partners and senior leaders on matters with material legal, regulatory and reputational impact. The role leads the Risk, Compliance and Internal Audit, and AML/CTF functions, supports the Board Risk Subcommittee, and has accountability for risk management, conflicts and ethics, regulatory compliance, contractual and insurance related risk. Through strong judgement and leadership, the General Counsel enables a risk aware, ethics led culture that protects the firms reputation and supports sustainable growth. Responsibilities providing strategic leadership of the firms legal, risk and ethics framework, ensuring alignment with the firms strategy, values and professional obligations; acting as a trusted senior advisor to the Board, partners and directors on legal, regulatory, ethical and reputational matters with firm-wide impact; leading and managing the Risk, Compliance and Internal Audit, and AML/CTF functions, setting clear priorities, accountabilities and performance expectations; owning and continuously improving the firms enterprise risk management framework, including oversight of conflicts, ethics, audits, claims and regulatory compliance; acting as a key member of the Board Risk Subcommittee, including preparation of Board-level risk reporting and escalation of material risk and ethical issues; providing authoritative guidance on professional obligations and legal risk, including client engagement risk, conflicts, ethics, privilege and trust-related issues; overseeing contractual and insurance related risk, including engagement terms, secondments, escrow arrangements, and professional indemnity insurance matters; leading the firms response to emerging and non-traditional risks, including technology-enabled risk, AI governance, information security, privacy, cyber preparedness, business continuity and modern slavery reporting; embedding a strong risk aware and ethics-led culture, leading and developing specialist teams in line with the Director-level Corporate Services Career Development Framework and supporting firm-wide training and capability uplift. About You an Australian law degree and hold a valid Australian practising certificate; a minimum of 7 years of post-admission experience (PAE); knowledge of legal profession regulation; familiarity with law firm risk management practices; understanding of the operating model of law firms; the ability to engage, influence and advise senior stakeholders; strong organisational and co-ordination skills; demonstrated commitment to quality, consistency and continuous improvement; strong judgement and discretion in managing sensitive, complex and high-risk matters; outstanding attention to detail; and the ability to operate with confidence and discretion at senior levels.
