The PEPAH program aims to strengthen Australias partnerships in the Pacific on animal health and biosecurity issues.Why youre important to us and what impact will you have. The Australian Chief Veterinary Officer (ACVO) is the primary advisor to the Australian Government on matters relating to Australias animal health status and associated systems. The ACVO represents Australias animal health interests globally, regionally and nationally to manage animal biosecurity risks and maximise trade opportunities for Australian producers. The Office of the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer (OCVO) supports the ACVOs leadership on significant, high-profile and diverse issues. We work collaboratively with key stakeholders from within and outside government, and value diversity. Key functions within the OCVO include: anticipating, preparing for, and responding to animal health issues of potential national significance, representing Australias interests in the development of international animal health trade standards and policies, fulfilling Australias international animal disease reporting requirements, and representing Australias favourable animal health status, working closely with health and environment agencies to manage emerging One Health risks, working closely with Pacific Island countries and territories, and other regional counterparts to strengthen animal health systems in the Indo-Pacific region and enhance regional cooperation and partnerships. As a Veterinary Officer in the Pacific Engagement Program for Animal Health section, you will support delivery of animal health capacity building projects with Australias Pacific near neighbours, with a view to enhance animal health and biosecurity in Australia and our region. We are looking for someone to fill a non-ongoing temporary vacancy in our team initially until December 2026, with the possibility of extension. We also want to establish a merit pool to fill non-ongoing or ongoing vacancies that may come up for similar roles in the department in the next 18 months. This is where you play an important role. As the Veterinary Officer - Pacific Engagement, you will: Contribute to strategic planning, policy design and projects to support departmental and whole-of-government priorities relating to regional relationship building, animal health and biosecurity in the Indo-Pacific. Engage, liaise and negotiate with stakeholders to strengthen multilateral and bilateral relationships with partner countries like Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and Pacific partner organisations such as the Pacific Community. Identify key scientific and policy issues relevant to building animal health and biosecurity capacities offshore. Assist with the development of project and funding proposals and support the management of associated projects and activities. Provide support for international travel and remote area fieldwork, including the preparation of international travel proposals, procurement and delivery of veterinary and survey supplies, travel logistics, and administrative support. Contribute to reports, briefings, presentations, cables, and other communication materials; and provide analysis of surveillance data, technical and policy advice to the ACVO, departmental Executive and external stakeholders on regionally relevant animal health and biosecurity issues. Support the development of Australia''s contributions to relevant international and domestic forums. Demonstrated experience building and maintaining strong working relationships and collaborative partnerships with Australian and international stakeholders. Experience managing and delivering projects involving stakeholder groups from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Previous experience working in the field of international development. Experience working with Pacific Island cultures and animal health systems will be considered an advantage. A moderate foundation (or an area of interest) in veterinary epidemiology. The successful candidate: Must be required to complete specific training (including refresher training) related to the role including remote area training, defensive driving, first aid and CPR courses. May be required to travel in remote/isolated locations in northern Australia or its near northern neighbours, using various transport including vessels, light/commercial aircraft, helicopters, and manual 4WD vehicles. May be required, from time to time, to work in difficult, remote and harsh environments (possibly for extended periods) under limited supervision or in teams.
