Primary objective To provide clinical expertise in anaesthesia, acute pain and perioperative medicine at the Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals. Context statement The Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia is involved in the delivery of Anaesthesia and Peri-Operative Medicine services primarily at Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital (RDPH), under guidance and supervision (direct and indirect) of an Anaesthesia specialist. RDPH is the principal tertiary hospital within the region and provides a broad range of referral services in all specialty areas to the Darwin urban population as well as serving the Top End of the NT, Western Australia and South-East Asia. RDPH is the largest teaching hospital in the NT and is also recognised as the home of the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre (NCCTRC). Palmerston Hospital is a satellite campus currently providing Elective Surgery services. Key duties and responsibilities 1. Provide anaesthesia, acute pain and peri-operative medicine services at a level commensurate with at least four years training in anaesthesia 2. Provision of anaesthesia services to Top End Health Service hospitals (primarily Royal Darwin and Palmerston Regional Hospitals, but may also provide outreach Anaesthesia services to Katherine and Gove Hospitals) 3. Provide supervision and teaching to trainees in anaesthesia including those enrolled in ANZCA, DRGA and other specialty training pathways 4. Participate in the development of the discipline of Anaesthesia in the Northern Territory (NT) including research, continuous education and training of medical, nursing and paramedical personnel. 5. Provide, with other members of the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, emergency after-hours care and consultancy service on a roster basis, supported by a Specialist Anaesthetist 6. Participate in education activities the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine has commitments to; including undergraduate, postgraduate, pre-vocational and vocational trainees. 7. Provide leadership, consultation and support to all staff in Top End Health Service (TEHS). 8. Participate in Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities, including completion of QI or research project during Provisional Fellowship year. 9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces. 10. There are pre-determined ANZCA Provisional Fellowship plans for Simulation/Education, Perioperative Medicine, Perioperative Echocardiography, High Risk Obstetrics and General roles (with other portfolios available in safety/quality and sustainability) 11. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour. Selection criteriaEssential 1. General registration with the Medical Board of Australia. 2. Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency 3. Current training with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and successful completion of Final Examination by time of commencement 4. Demonstrated interpersonal, leadership, oral and written communication skills. 5. Ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment, as a team member. 6. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health. Desirable 1. Evidence of commitment and participation in; continuing education, teaching, research and CQI activities. 2. Proven ability to manage self and others, monitor performance, manage change and develop policy with an understanding of EEO and WHS principals and policies. Further information Positions are available for 6 or 12 months with potential starting dates of August 2026, February 2027 or August 2027.
