About the National Film and Sound Archive The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is Australias audiovisual archive, telling the national story by collecting, preserving and sharing audiovisual media, the cultural experience platforms of our time. The collection itself dates back to 1935, making it one of the worlds oldest audiovisual collections. It is also one of the countrys most used cultural collections, with around 125 million views of collection content each year. The NFSA is in a period of significant change. Following increased Government investment, the institution is in a process of digital transformation, establishing the NFSA as Australias most dynamic and valued cultural organisation. We are rebuilding our curatorial workforce and developing the NFSAs capacity to digitise our collection at scale to preserve it for the future, to make sure it can be discovered, and to share it with all Australians. We continue to work on developing a stable, secure and future-proof workforce across our four physical sites based in Canberra and Mitchell in the ACT as well as in Sydney and Melbourne. The team plays a key role in sustaining the systems, workflows, and operational processes that support the National Film and Sound Archives digital collection, ensuring it can be preserved, managed, and made available for access and reuse over time. The teams work underpins long-term preservation outcomes across digitised and born-digital content, supporting organisational priorities in digital preservation, born-digital acquisition, and digitisation programs. Working collaboratively across curatorial, collecting, technical and delivery areas, the team translates preservation intent into scalable, standards-aligned practice, manages and evolves the preservation systems ecosystem, and delivers repeatable operations across ingest, curation, access, and migration. The team also provides active digital collection care and risk management, undertakes legacy and backlog recovery to reduce inherited technical debt, and pilots emerging and complex digital forms, transitioning successful approaches into sustainable business-as-usual capability. The OpportunityThe Digital Preservation Analyst works as part of the Digital Preservation Operations team, which serves as the central point of contact for digital content entering and leaving the collection. The team ensures that incoming material meets digital preservation standards and that outgoing content is fit for use, reviewing and processing born-digital and digitised content as it arrives, identifying and resolving technical issues before material enters the collection, and checking content being prepared for access or delivery. The role supports the day-to-day operational delivery of these activities through close collaboration with colleagues across the Digital Preservation Department and with stakeholders throughout the organisation. This includes processing born-digital and digitised materials, undertaking Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC), performing content verification and data extraction, and contributing to the reliable implementation of preservation workflows. Working within defined digital preservation methodologies and standards, the role ensures that digital content entering and leaving the collection meets technical requirements, supports the long-term integrity and usability of digital materials, and aligns with organisational priorities. The key duties of the position include:Under limited direction, the role will: Undertake processing of born-digital and digitised material, applying established workflows and QA/QC processes to ensure consistent and reliable outcomes. Support the technical assessment of digital material for preservation and access purposes, escalating complex or non-routine issues as required. Provide sound technical advice to staff and external stakeholders from television broadcast, film and audio production, interactive entertainment industries, and academic collaborators. Assist in testing and evaluating contemporary and obsolete equipment, systems and hardware/software to automate and support digital acquisitions and digitisation. Contribute to the development, implementation and documentation of efficient and effective digital preservation workflows, informed by operational experience and day-to-day delivery needs. Assist in maintaining and updating the NFSAs digital collection specifications, contributing to the continuous improvement and practical application of preservation standards to meet evolving archival and reuse needs. Work collaboratively with local and global digital preservation communities to identify and prioritise at-risk digital material and develop processes and plans to ensure ongoing preservation and access. Apply digital preservation standards, procedures, and tools consistently to support reliable, repeatable operational delivery. Undertake appropriate administrative tasks and reporting including contributing to operational planning, drafting procedures, undertaking research and analysis; and providing input into pilot and project activities as required. Selection Criteria The successful candidate will demonstrate their capacity against the following: Proven audiovisual technical expertise in a broadcast, production, or cultural heritage environment, with demonstrated experience working with digital objects, associated standards and applications, particularly in relation to QA/QC. Demonstrated knowledge of analogue and digital audiovisual material, games and interactive media, digital objects and carrier formats, post-production techniques and digital delivery methods, as it relates to collecting institutions. Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail, with the ability to troubleshoot issues, follow established procedures, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced operational environment. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and document efficient and effective digital workflows in line with established standards, resources, and priorities. Well-developed written and oral communication skills including the ability to explain technical information to a range of stakeholders, and to work both independently and as part of a team.
