Fixed Term Part Time Appointment | 0.2FTE on a 2-year contract Research Active Academic Level D/E Annual salary $162,335 $195,391 pa + 17% superannuation & 6 weeks annual leave Casuarina Campus | Larrakia Country About the Position As the Chair of the Charles Darwin University Animal Ethics Committee (CDU-AEC), you will be responsible for the overall ethical oversight and conduct of animal-based research and teaching under the Committees remit. This role ensures compliance with the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (Code), CDU policies and procedures, the Northern Territory Animal Protection Act and other relevant legislation. Reporting to the Director, Office of Research and Innovation, the Chair works closely with the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI), particularly the Animal Welfare Officer and Research Ethics Administrator, to ensure the Committee operates effectively and in accordance with its Terms of Reference. The Chair provides professional leadership to Committee members, ensures rigorous review of animal-related project applications and promotes best practices in animal welfare and ethics across the University. The Chair position is also an ex-officio member of the University Research Committee. About You To be successful, you will require: A minimum PhD level qualification/s in a relevant discipline (or related discipline) including original, innovative, and distinguished contributions to research, scholarship and teaching as demonstrated through sustained and distinguished performance. Previous experience as a Chair or Deputy Chair, or member of an Animal Ethics Committee or similar governance or regulatory committee. Deep knowledge of the Code and relevant animal welfare legislation and demonstrated experience applying these in practice. Demonstrated experience in the rigorous assessment of complex ethics proposals, including risk benefit analysis and application of ethical review. Demonstrated ability to chair committees effectively, facilitate discussion, manage conflicts of interest, maintain confidentiality and exercise high professional integrity and impartiality. Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, including the capacity to liaise with researchers, facility staff, external regulators and community members, and manage conflicts where necessary. Proven capacity to manage time and priorities, with evidence of administrative effectiveness and working collaboratively with support staff to ensure efficient committee operation. Additional Criteria at Level E Demonstrated ability to provide high-level leadership in animal ethics governance, including influencing institutional policies, frameworks and practices across the University. Experience providing expert advice or representing the institution in regulatory, professional or sector forums related to animal ethics or research governance, and advising senior leadership on policy, compliance, risk and best practice. Appointment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory National Criminal History check and a valid NT Working with Children clearance Remuneration Appointment to this role will be at HE Academic Level D/E. The base salary will be in the range of $162,335 - $195,391 per annum (po-rata). The total remuneration package will be in the range of $189,931- $228,607 per annum inclusive of 17% superannuation.
