For more information: The Role - Advocacy, Leadership and Real ResponsibilityTALS is seeking a full-time Senior Criminal Lawyerto join its Burnie office.Reporting to the Principal Lawyer, you will lead legal service delivery in a regional team while managing your own matters and appearing regularly in court. This is a hands-on advocacy role within Tasmanias fused legal profession, where you will manage files end-to-end and represent clients directly. You will appear in both the Magistrates Court and Supreme Court, including taking carriage of indictable matters and appearing on directions hearings, pleas, preliminary proceedings, bail applications and in trials. The ideal candidate will have experience in the Supreme Court, including jury trials. However, if you don''t, you will also be supported to develop Supreme Court trial experience, with an expectation that you have a genuine interest in building capability in this area. More specifically, your responsibilities include: Conducting and leading complex matters, including contested hearings Managing files to ensure high-quality and timely service delivery Providing day-to-day guidance and mentorship to junior lawyers, contributing to leadership and capability within a small regional team Delivering community legal education and engaging with local organisations Contributing to policy, advocacy, and service improvement initiatives This role operates within a small regional team, where organisation, adaptability, and a willingness to support across priorities are key to delivering consistent outcomes. About You - What Really MattersTo qualify, you will need to be admitted as a legal practitioner in Australia and hold, or be eligible to hold, a practising certificate in Tasmania. You will also bring a minimum of 4 to 5 years post-admission experience. Additionally, you will bring: Strong advocacy experience, including contested matters in the Magistrates Court Experience appearing in court and managing matters end-to-end A background in Legal Aid, Aboriginal Legal Services, or community legal settings, which is highly regarded Experience mentoring or supporting junior lawyers Most importantly, you will be someone who: Communicates clearly and builds trust with clients and colleagues Works collaboratively and contributes positively to team culture Is organised and able to manage competing priorities across multiple courts Success in this role comes from combining strong legal capability with a collaborative and team-oriented approach.
