Hunter New England Local Health District Reference number REQ657497 Occupation Specialist Work type Part-Time Location Newcastle, Hunter & Region Salary Information $197583 - $243822 Closing date 04 May 2026 at 11:59pm REQ657497 Staff Specialist in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine John Hunter Hospital Fixed term temporary part time 0.6 FTE (24 hours per week) 15 June 2026 - 1 August 2027 An exciting opportunity exists for a suitably qualified Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Physician to join the Respiratory and Sleep Department at John Hunter Hospital. In this temporary role, you will provide high quality, evidence based, patient focused General Respiratory, Sleep and Cystic Fibrosis services to admitted and non-admitted patients, as well as their families and carers. This position offers the chance to work in a busy, tertiary referral centre alongside a highly skilled and supportive multidisciplinary team, delivering comprehensive care across a wide range of respiratory and sleep disorders. About Us Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) is the largest local health district in NSW, delivering care to a diverse population of more than 900,000 people across the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid North Coast regions. John Hunter Hospital is a Level 6 tertiary referral, major trauma and teaching hospital and the largest hospital within HNELHD, with approximately 650 beds and continuing growth. The hospital has strong academic and research links with the Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle, supporting innovation, education and clinical excellence. The Respiratory and Sleep Department provides state wide and tertiary referral services including: Interstitial lung diseases Pleural disease Cystic Fibrosis Severe asthma Complex respiratory disorders The Sleep Unit services both the local health district and surrounding regions, comprising six dedicated beds and an extensive home sleep study program, conducting approximately 1,6001,700 sleep studies annually. Key Responsibilities Provide specialist clinical care in General Respiratory Medicine, Sleep Medicine and Cystic Fibrosis Deliver patient centred, evidence based care to inpatient and outpatient populations Utilise clinical information systems to support informed decision making and effective care planning Communicate and collaborate effectively with medical, nursing and allied health staff to ensure quality and continuity of care Participate in teaching, supervision and mentoring of junior medical staff and trainees Contribute to service development, quality improvement and clinical governance activities Comply with relevant legislation, NSW Ministry of Health policies and HNELHD procedures to support Activity Based Funding requirements and Commonwealth and State performance targets Essential Requirements: Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Current specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) Recent and comprehensive clinical experience in General Respiratory Medicine Completion of or evidence of working towards, Sleep Medicine and Cystic Fibrosis training Demonstrated commitment to patient centred care, clinical excellence and multidisciplinary teamwork Ability to provide consulting services to the Diagnostic Lung Cancer clinic at Calvary Mater Newcastle, if needed Why Join HNELHD?
