Senator Leah Blyth is seeking applications for a full time non-ongoing Policy Adviser. This role can be based in either Canberra or Adelaide. This contract is for 12 months, with the opportunity for extension. Position Overview The Policy Adviser role involves providing policy and legislative support across the Senators parliamentary, committee work and the Defence Infrastructure Portfolio. Key responsibilities include researching and analysing relevant government policies and legislation, preparing policy and parliamentary documentation, developing recommendations, monitoring parliamentary and portfolio related activity, liaising with stakeholders, supporting committee engagement, responding quickly to emerging issues, and coordinating with various parliamentary and office teams. The position requires the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and work collaboratively across a small team and wide range of functions. The key duties of the position include but are not limited to: Research, interpret and analyse legislation, legal frameworks and policy proposals relevant to the Defence Infrastructure Portfolio. Prepare policy submissions, briefing notes, speeches, media releases, talking points and FOI correspondence on parliamentary and portfolio related matters. Monitor parliamentary business, committee activity, inquiries and relevant media to provide proactive advice. Liaise with stakeholders including peak bodies, advocacy groups, academics, and government agencies. Support the Senator with parliamentary committees, including drafting reports, preparing Senate estimates packs and coordinating where required. Provide rapid-turnaround responses to emerging portfolio or political issues. Coordinate with Shadow Ministers, and electorate office staff where relevant. The ideal applicant will ideally possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience: Relevant tertiary qualifications and proven experience in legal, parliamentary, or defence policy roles. Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret legislation and complex material. Strong written communication skills with the ability to tailor tone for parliamentary, public or stakeholder audiences. Sound political judgement and understanding of parliamentary process. Ability to work as part of a team and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Experience working with or within a political office or public sector environment. The ability to travel with occasional irregular work hours, particularly during parliamentary sitting weeks. Employment conditions: The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include: A commencing salary between $76,910 and $89,793 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills. An additional ESA allowance of up to $37,153 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work. Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements). An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.
