The Ontario Fire Department''s Fire Prevention Bureau is searching for a qualified individual interested in furthering their career in the field of fire prevention / fire safety as a Senior Fire Safety Specialist. The Senior Fire Safety Specialist position performs inspection and enforcement work on commercial, industrial, residential, state-regulated and public assembly buildings to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local codes and regulations governing fire and life safety. In addition, the Senior Fire Safety Specialist is responsible for independently resolving issues of advanced complexity, assisting Fire Safety Specialists with large and complex projects, and may act as project manager for small, less complex projects. The ideal candidate for the Senior Fire Safety Specialist position will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, thrive in a fast-paced work environment, and demonstrate a passion for collaborating on largescale development projects. The essential functions typically performed by the Senior Fire Safety Specialist include the following: Serves as project team leader; oversees major projects; prepares and maintains documentation of systems, programs, and projects related to fire inspection and prevention. Makes recommendations to determine and develop best practices. Mentors, trains, and provides technical assistance to lower level staff. May direct the work of technical, administrative and other support staff. Inspects commercial, industrial, residential, state-regulated and public assembly buildings for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment, adequacy of fire escapes and fire exits, and general compliance with fire prevention codes, laws and regulations relating to hazardous materials and fire and life safety; assists suppression personnel with fire prevention inspections. Prepares and maintains records and reports regarding fire inspection and/or fire prevention activities. Investigates and responds to complaints concerning alleged code violations and fire hazards. Operates a City vehicle in the performance of job duties. Researches and responds to technical fire and life safety questions from the general public. Presents public education programs on fire and life safety to schools, factories, and businesses. Provides instruction on the use of fire extinguishers, alarm systems, proper fire and chemical storage safety precautions, and other fire protection equipment requirements. Interprets and explains codes, regulations, permit programs, code enforcement rules, hazardous materials, high pile storage, and other requirements and procedures to developers, contractors, property owners, and the general public. Issues notices of violation and citations; assists in the legal process to gain code compliance. Interviews juvenile fire setters and their families; provides education on the dangers of playing with fire. Remains current on new trends and innovations in the field of fire prevention and investigation; maintains contact with professional and trade associations and performs related research. Acts as liaison to federal, state and local agencies in securing abatement of nuisances and other outdoor fire and life safety hazards. Coordinates fire prevention events; provides public education relating to fire prevention topics and existing programs; designs and/or maintains public educational information materials. Provides fire prevention and safety standby for assigned special events and programs; performs after hours inspection duties for public assemblies. Makes recommendations concerning overcrowding and fire safety at public assemblies. Minimum Requirements Education High School diploma or a recognized equivalent. Experience Four years of technical experience related to fire safety code enforcement performing fire and life safety inspection and enforcement duties. License Valid California Class C driver''s license and an acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment. Certifications California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Prevention Officer (retired) or Fire Prevention II (2A, 2B, 2C) certificate OR successful completion of the Fire Inspector II certificates required coursework (Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D and Haz Mat First Responder Awareness). Ability to obtain PC 832 certification, issued by an authorized provider, within one year of employment. NOTE: Proof of certification must be provided by way of attachment to your online application. Desirable Bachelor''s degree in a field closely related to fire prevention, fire investigation or fire safety. Possession of International Code Council Fire Inspector I or Fire Inspector II certification and OSHA Hazardous Materials Fire Responder Awareness certification or equivalent. Knowledge of complex fire protection systems and specialized fire protection equipment. Familiarity with regulations and standards specified in the California Fire and Building Codes.
