About the job: POLICORNER is hiring a reporter for our new, Peel Region, subscription-based publication.The ideal candidate is a reporter who will cover the local and regional politics of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon including next year's municipal elections. You have experience with political reporting, can develop strong sourcing in all three municipalities and will thrive in a start-up-oriented newsroom. You have a deep understanding of municipal government and how it operates. Most importantly, you're sourced up, obsessed with breaking news and you're interested in out-reporting the competition on the region's politics, policies and personalities.This is a remote position, but the successful candidate must be based in the Greater Toronto Area and able to have an on-the-ground presence in Peel Region when needed.About the publication: Our new Peel Region-based publication, under development, is an extension of our must-read, Queen's Park-based political newsletter. Read and trusted by Peel's top political players, it will be an essential, deeply-reported read on the politics, policies and personalities in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. The newsletter will publish every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7 a.m.Responsibilities:Write and produce our Peel Region-newsletter.Cover local and regional council meetings, committee meetings, the mayors, councillors, and city leadership, the school boards, municipalelections and more.Conduct multi-media appearances, as appropriate.Experience:A degree in journalism, political science or an equivalent area of study.One year experience in a newsroom is preferred but not required.Experience covering federal, provincial or municipal politics is an asset.Requirements:A solid grasp of municipal and regional government and their relationship with the province.Familiarity with the key players and issues at Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon City/Town Hall.A lively, conversational writing style.A record of breaking news and high-value enterprise.Ability to build up a strong sourcing network.Compensation:This is a contract position. If you're looking for traditional salary and structure, this may not be the role. Were a startup reader-funded and building from the ground up.Were pricing subscriptions at $25 a month or $250 a year.
